Baal HaSulam. Introduction to The Study of the Ten Sefirot. #31
1.Rav’s Introduction: We are now coming to a special part in the Introduction to the Study of the Ten Sefirot. It is the longest Introduction from Baal HaSulam where he explains the correction of the world depends on the dissemination of the wisdom of Kabbalah to the many. Why? One person cannot correct the world, but we need the reason to spread out among the masses, what is so special about that. Let’s read it, study it, the language is not so easy, so ask we might be able to interpret some things and we will advance but these things are very important and fundamental.
Excerpt #31 (01:29)
R. (01:58) In other words why do we need to disseminate to everyone without any limits and why the general correction of the world depends on that.
Excerpt #31 continues (02:12)
2. R. (02:42) Meaning, even when there is no general knowledge of the Creator, his dominion over the world, nevertheless, during the exile, there such people from generation to generation attain the Creator and somehow manage to spread this knowledge of the Creator to everyone.
Excerpt #31 continues (03:13)
3. R. (03:29) Meaning they are all in the will to receive and that is why it is called they are in exile and only a few among them attain something.
Excerpt #31 continues (03:40)
4. R. (03:50) Even when they study Torah, they do it in such a way they don’t see anything more than stories and dry laws.
Excerpt #31 continues (04:00)
5. R. (04:54) Meaning, all the spirits, all those revelations that can come from above and hover over all the people don’t come to the people and they are still in the dark.
Excerpt #31 continues (05:12)
6. R. (06:35) There are conditions here that they are telling us about and if we keep them we can reach something and we need to scrutinize these conditions. These conditions we need to keep are called “handmaid” and what we need to reach is “her mistress”, the true Malchut. Let’s continue, this is just the introduction.
Excerpt #32 continues (07:10)
7. R. (08:15) There are several questions here that we need to scrutinize. Meaning, what is our engagement in the wisdom of Kabbalah and Torah as we say. Why should it be in order to reach the revelation of the Creator that’s really the question. What kind of revelation, what kind of engagement in the Torah? What do we need to have, what do we need to do, how to learn to study in order to rebuild the Creator?
Excerpt #33 (08:54)
8. R. (09:55) Meaning, there are two stages in this statement of spiritually. The first is concealment, exertion, when we need to add many efforts to it, and we still cannot see the results that we long after and the second stage where we begin to reveal the results of what we have worked on before.
Excerpt #33 continues (10:26)
9. R. (11:18) In other words, if a person doesn’t come with intention to bestow, to want to connect to the others, to bestow to the other and if he does if he can’t succeed in drawing the reforming light that will change him then everything he did goes to the Klipa, shell.
Excerpt #33 Continues (11:43)
10. S. (12:15) What does it mean that the revelation of the Creator is fear and love?
R. He is telling us we need to have fear and love and how to exactly interpret it, we will learn about it later. Just remember, what he wrote here is that there needs to be fear and love with a certain connection between them the Creator will come to them.
11. S. (13:05) How to determine that we are working in Lo Lishma, on the right path?
R. Lishma means in order to bestow that we are drawn to bestow to one another and through us to the Creator, this is called Lishma. Not for her sake means the opposite of that. Even though we are in the will to receive for ourselves, we need to invest, study to draw the reforming light which returns us to the good state, where we will begin to think of the benefit of the other, bestow to the other and we will come to the quality of Lishma to bestow. By that we will reveal the correct connection to the Creator.
12. S. (14:15) We go through so many states in the lessons, and the meetings that we have during the day and the world is like a washing machine like the stones rubbing themselves, how can I separate myself from my ego and know exactly what I have to do for the Creator and for my friends?
R. We are learning. This is what we are learning about. What we should do between us and mostly between us and friends so that our connection will be suitable for the quality of bestowal of the Creator at least to some extent and then we will begin to feel according to equivalence of form we will begin to feel the Creator in our vessels. Here are the main things for the vessels that we are preparing for the correction. It is really opposite to sanctity, and until I despair of my work where I don’t reach any good outcome from it, I cannot come to it.
Because I work from within my will to receive, from my ego and as long as I work from my ego and I don’t despair of it, I cannot turn to the Creator and truly ask for him to give me his nature. Hence, all of our work in the first state, is to gradually, we are tired of our own qualities, nature and here a person needs the connection with the group especially and together with the study and the teacher to find out exactly his advancement is seemingly opposite. Meaning, the more he approaches with his feeling it’s keeps moving further away, he’s looking for the feeling, the understanding, the recognition in his feeling, such things that you receive through the power of the will to receive, and he sees that he has a vessel which grows emptier and emptier. So how can he continue? Specifically in this way when we advance we cross a certain barrier and we go to the other side of the coin, as he speaks here.
13. S. (17:42) What is the difference between for the sake of the Shechina, Divinity and for the sake of the Creator?
R. We will learn about it. There is a difference for us now, that is, nothing is properly gradient, but we will see later that there are many types, many moments of the forces of bestowal that are before us. Some of them we can perceive and that’s why we connect to the source which is called the Creator.
14. S. (18:32) What is the dry Torah?
R. The dry Torah means they lack the upper force. The one that they learn and learn to understand the dry laws to keep and that is it, they have no attainment of the Creator, no feeling of what exists above it.
S. You said one of the conditions to achieve anything is to be in a state of the mistress. What is the state of being a mistress?
R. The handmaid is the state that precedes the revelation of the Creator. Why do we have to go through it, where we still engage in the vessels of reception, but we are gradually coming closer to the vessels of bestowal. This is called “handmaid of Holiness”, but they are also an impure handmaid when we think that we are in the will to receive and we are approaching sanctity but in truth we cannot, we cannot approach it because this path leads to the Klipa, shell. So, in our state when we begin to work there are seemingly two paths before us, the path of holiness and the part of shell, Klipa and everything depends on how much we realize and employ the wisdom of Kabbalah, either we connect between us, and we work with our forces, or we remain the way we are until we dry out.
15. S. (20:50) In the one before last paragraph that we read now in thirty-three he writes if their faith is incomplete, and he doesn’t engage in Torah and work only because the Creator commanded him to study, and the light will not be revealed, and he becomes a bat and is a goner. What is this condition to have completely faith and you should engage in the Torah and work because the Creator commanded him to learn?
R. Only on the condition that we rebuild the qualities of Bina, called faith. Inside the quality of faith, the quality of Bina and the light of Hassadim, you can see the light of Hochma, which is the Creator.
S. What does it mean his faith should be complete, what kind of faith are we talking about?
R. Meaning he still does not reach action of bestowal and pure acts of bestowal and that’s why he cannot reveal in them the illumination of Hochma, which is the Creator.
S. I understand that the student should be in complete faith in the state of Lo Lishma, and this is what enables him to work for Lishma. What is the complete faith in Lo Lishma?
R. In the state of Lo Lishma there cannot be complete faith.
S. What does he mean his faith should be complete, complete faith in the sages?
R. Yes, he needs to adhere in the group, adhered with the teacher and by that he will reach a state with the light of Hassadim will be able to clothe in him and prepare in him the structure for the revelation of the Creator.
S. Can a person know?
R. No, you cannot measure the light of Hassadim, and it is not good to do it in this way. The intention is to be in the light of Hassadim in order to bestow. It is the opposite of here there is no measurement.
S. What do we do with those instructions we often hear? How much do we advance in connection and try to measure?
R. These are degrees of soul devotion, degrees of a person’s unification with the ten.
S. Should we measure?
R. We should want to measure it and see that is possible and then we show him from above and even in that there are ascents and descents, but none as wise as the experienced.
S. What does it mean he needs to learn because the Creator commanded him to learn?
R. Meaning he has nothing personal in it, rather as we learn he does it to bring contentment to the Creator because of the Creator not because of a person that person needs to reach a state where he seemingly does not exist, but I do something that is outside of me and for it to remain outside of me, I have nothing and I will have no interest in it, rather it is all in order to bestow.
Excerpt #34 (24:47)
16. R. (26:13) Meaning that of all the nations those parts of the general soul of Adam HaRishon we will gather such parts, to gather more and more and connect together.
Excerpt #34 (26:30)
17. R. (27:18) We need to first draw or extend the light of Hassadim between us, we demand nothing except to being able to bestow to one another and then from that the light of Hassadim awakens and fills us then as a result we can continue to demand that light of Hochma and so it will go through the light of Hassadim and fill us all and this is called the revelation of the Creator to the created beings.
18. S. (27:58) What is the order of channels in spirituality and what are they?
R. We are not learning about it yet but there are thirty-two channels of wisdom, paths of wisdom. There are such connections between such channels that connect the Sefirot, in which the light of Hochma traverses because the Sefirot are filled with the light of Hassadim and in order to bestow on the light of Hochma can traverse the Sefirot this is the meaning of the channels, paths of wisdom. Thirty-two paths of wisdom.
19. S. (28:55) What is the Messiah?
R. Messiah is the upper light that corrects the vessels then in those vessels the light of Hochma can clothe. Hence this light lets the upper light clothe in the vessels is called Mashiach, because it pulls them from the intention to receive to the intention to bestow.
20. S. (30:04) What is the feeling that we are not awakening the love?
R. We will learn about it. This question is a bit ahead of its time, but we will get to it soon.
21. S. (30:46) What is the difference between the qualities of the handmaid and the qualities of the mistress? How do we discern between the characteristics in the world?
R. The handmaid is the light of Hassadim that the mistress clothes in the vessels of reception, sanctifies them and corrects them and the mistress is the light of Hochma that clothes in the light of Hassadim and fills the vessels and corrects them finally. Meaning, to bestow in order to bestow is the correction of the vessels, this is called handmaid and to receive in order to bestow when the light of Hochma clothes in the vessels is called the mistress.
22. S. (31:44) How do we work on a feeling so as to discover the Creator?
R. Activate the feeling. What can I do? If you begin to relate to one another and the feeling, you discover the feeling towards the Creator.
23. S. (32:08) in what way can we awaken the love of mercy. What is the love of mercy?
R. Love of mercy is the tendency to giving, that I wish to bestow Hassadim, simply to bestow to others. This is the condition in the group for the beginning of the construction of the web of mutual bestowal between us where the Creator is revealed.
24. S. (32:47) Over the years of learning my fuel has changed from a personal desire to reveal the upper world to a desire to bestow to the friends. Is this the right advancement?
R. Yes, it is the right advancement.
25. S. (33:09) As we advance we should feel the inability to advance to each other, but if we feel warmth to each other, is this a shell or lying to herself?
R. One does not belong to the other. I can feel myself completely empty of the attainment of the purpose of creation and I can be content with my current state.
26. S. (33:42) Is there a difference between labor and the type of work we do in the preparation which will later bring us the revelation of the Creator?
R. These two types of excavations have found in a person they change, they connect and separate but later they will become one. It is one decided to bestow through all created beings to the Creator. Where the created being is the vessel, and the Creator is the light.
Excerpt #35 (34:35)
27. R. (36:03) Meaning, if we intend to reach Lishma in order to bestow, the revelation of the Creator, that revelation the light of Hochma in our vessels, even though all of our vessels are completely not corrected even the light of Hassadim, but our intention is such that you can say that we are on the right path towards a goal. Then we discover along the way the Shechina or its stages, meaning our vessel and through all the stages is getting corrected more and more to reach such a correction where the light of Hassadim is revealed in it and then the light of Hochma is revealed. In this way we come to the correction.
Excerpt #35 continues: (37:01)
27. R. (40:21) Those who do not come to the wisdom of Kabbalah in order to correct their vessels through it they are in the dry Torah and in the end they come to the Klipa, shells. And those who engage in the wisdom of Kabbalah the more they correct ,they correct themselves and approach Kedusha, Holiness and come closer to the Creator, and in our world, there is nothing else to do. That’s what they say, that either they advance to the wisdom of Kabbalah to the Creator, or you remain as you were born and the same to the level of a beast. They are all as beast as it says.
28. S. (41:12) The Messiah, the light of Hassadim, does it work on our attitude in the ten?
R. Exactly, very well. According to which we are related to each other in the ten we awaken the upper light and turn us and promotes us to connection and Kedusha, Holiness. These things are pretty simple. It’s either this or that.
29. S. (42:09) So it turns out that Lo Lishma is when I study the Wisdom of Kabbalah? Is this what it comes down to?
R. If you don’t study the Wisdom of Kabbalah, you remain a beast. Still, vegetive and animate, that’s it; that’s what we have in this world. The speaking degree, In order to emerge from the animate level where there are all as a beast, this is already rising above the animate, and to rise above it you need a special force that comes from above, from a higher level, from the Creator. So, it will influence you and you will rise from the animate degree to the humane degree, to the degree of Adam, who is somewhat similar, Dome, to the Creator. What are you asking?
S. I’m asking, in these excerpts he distinguishes between the dry Torah and to be in Lo Lishma?
R. Because you can take all kinds of books that Kabbalists wrote and study them, but not in order to attain the power of bestowal, the Creator, connection, but in order to know, understand it, to gain something then the Torah will be dry, because there’s no reforming light there, you are not rising to the level of the Creator, and this is how you will remain. Either you take these books correctly and relate to them correctly, through connection. This is what he tells us in Item 31: There is a great need to explain once and for all, why the coming of the Messiah depends on the study of Kabbalah to the masses; the masses are the emphasis. Also, in the sentence before 31 he says, particularly to the many, the coming of the Messiah depends, soon in our days. So, what is this about, the expansion of the Wisdom of Kabbalah to the many? To correct the common broken vessel of Adam HaRishon so it becomes as one vessel. This is why the correction method should be spread among everyone.
30. S. (45:30) How can I tell if I’m learning Kabbalah for the sake of correction and not for my own sake, how to feel it?
R. How can you feel if you’re engaging in the Wisdom of Kabbalah in order to correct yourself or in order to be smart? it’s according to how much you exert in connection in the group, there the changes in correction should come, only in that.
S. But I can also invest in the group for myself, for my honor or my appreciation. How do I know if I do it according to what they write?
R. According to what they write you need to see if you are following the councils, the advice of the kabbalists or not. This is what it is all about.
31. S. (46:32) Is there such a possibility for us to turn the study of Kabbalah to a dry study?
R. Of course, in each and every one. If we don’t yearn for the intention to bestow, to draw the reforming light so it’ll be among us, and we, each of us will remain within ourselves without wanting to emerge from within ourselves and be connected in our hearts into one heart. If we don’t have this propensity, this disposition, if we don’t ask the Creator to help us understand what it means to be connected together, so that you will give us some sort of this disposition toward it, some desire for it, some quality or bestowal to have in this. If we don’t yearn for this then we are in danger of remaining this way, forever. Afterwards, there will be corrections, of course there will be because the creator doesn’t drop it. But we, who received an opportunity to come closer to Him especially now, today, in this life, this will stop if we God forbid don’t want to implement it every day in the connection between us.
S. Eventually we need the correct that deficiency?
R. The Creator gives the deficiency. That’s it.
Excerpt #36 (48:28)
32. S. (50:25) This is clear right? We are on the path, we receive an awakening, and the Creator wants to lead us to the final correction of our personal and our general common soul. This is what he set up for us; the groups and arrange everything for us, gave us such systems by which we can advance, and accordingly we see according to these texts also, how much we are exactly within the campaign. But, if we don’t use what He’s giving us then it is as if we disrespect the opportunity that He is given to us, and then we will end our lives like everyone else. Of course in incarnations we will still reincarnate into more and more corrections, again and again, because no outcasts should be outcasted from Him, and everyone eventually returned to his root. But these opportunities we might lose, we might miss out on them so we should be afraid of it and try to use every moment for correction.
33. S. (51:47) How do we invite the Messiah to our ten’s vessel?
R. This is what we are learning all the time: We should unite, we should together ask the Creator to connect us, to bring us closer to Him, to give us the power to bestow between us and between us to Him and this is how we approach. It is not a simple path; it is a long way, and we can constantly work against our ego and scrutinize it. But continue, it is working, it’s working and in this world we have nothing else to do; from day to day we see how short our lives are, how empty they are, and if we don’t fill ourselves with corrections of approaching the Creator then, we will live like a beast in every sense of the word. So, there is only one thing really, to engage and to do what we need to do in this world to sustain our beasts; and in every other ounce of energy and attention give it to spiritual development, and this is what we constantly learn about.
34. S. (53:35) What is it about Lishma that Is the redemption, and redemption for what?
R. Redemption is from the egoistic force, from the intention to receive. This egoistic force disconnects you from spiritual life, from the sensation of the Creator, from feeling the actual reality and you are living a life of a beast. Just like beasts and animals care only for themselves and their families and their offspring, so you will be closed only in this. You need to be in this as well but why are you living, all and all? In order to come through connection and correction of your soul, to adhesion with the Creator; to the level with the Creator, this is what you have to achieve, as it is written “return all children of Israel unto the Lord your God”.
S. Are there other methods through which we can reach redemption or only through the Wisdom of Kabbalah?
R. As much as I have checked, none. No other way. Because no other method uses the tools or vessels the way the Wisdom of Kabbalah does.
S. So, how can you use the Wisdom of Kabbalah to reach Lishma, for her sake?
R. The wisdom of Kabbalah is a wisdom that awakens the reforming light, it awakens the upper force so it will influence us, correct us, and elevate us to its level.
S. Meaning to draw the reforming light is only with the method of the Wisdom of Kabbalah?
R. Yes, show me, show me another way. There is no other method that talks about these things. That we are a will to receive, and we have to correct ourselves to work in order to bestow and by this we achieve adhesion to the Creator, and all those 125 degrees and worlds, show me.
S. What is the formula? How to draw the reforming light in the highest concentration? What is the best method?
R. When you enter a group, as egoistic as you are, and all of you, among you decide that you are working in connection between you as much as possible and if you discovered that is impossible, you turn to the upper force and then, by revealing every time how deficient you are of the qualities of bestowal; you turn to the upper Force to give you His qualities, meaning to appear in you, basically. This is what you are asking the Creator: Creator, we want you to appear between us, we demand this of You. This is the method. It is a very simple method, there are no complications here, it’s a natural method: You are in the power of reception, and you need the force of bestowal. It is a force that exists and governs in a higher level than your world, so ask for it.
S. You said it is a simple method, but it comes from your ego, is not that easy?
R. But it’s not you who is working, it is the upper light that is working. But you have to demand it from It.
S. We need to receive a deficiency for it.
R. Meaning you constantly be in prayer.
35. S. (57:46) What does it mean that the spirit of the Messiah can disappear? when we don’t use the light of corrections only for self-benefit?
R. The fact that we have an inclination toward spirituality means that we have a little bit of this spirit of the Messiah. And, the fact that we pray for more and more of this upper light to come and influence us, this is called “summoning the Messiah.”
36. S. (58:33) Who or what determines the degree of refinement or purity of our actions?
R. We, ourselves, to the extent that we unite among us, according to this we determine the level of refinement; to the extent that we try to connect among us by these we determine the refinement between us. Yes.
37. S. (59:06) Who is the divinity for us?
R. The Shechina, the divinity between us, is our qualities that connect together and because they are different and yet, agree to be together, the Creator will be revealed in them.
38. S. (59:28) What is the meaning of “the spirit of God hovered above the water?”
R. It is the light of wisdom coming and hovering over the water, which is the light of Hassadim, Mercy and fills them.
39. S. (59:48) Is fear of separation and love closeness, and only through that fear and love we come to the Creator?
R. Yes, correct.
40. S. (01:00:05) How not to squander an opportunity that was given to us?
R. Through connections between us. When we draw the Creator to correct the connections between us and fill them; become revealed in them.
I thank the women for their questions, and I am very happy that we have such a big and strong part in our group.
Excerpt #37 (01:00:42)
41. R. (01:01:24) In other words, previously there were such studies in the Wisdom of Kabbalah in which it was possible to materialize things, to materialize them, make them corporeal. So, all the forces we talk about which are actually spiritual forces, people who read the books they saw them in a corporeal way, as being in our world, in all kinds of images, all kinds of corporal forms. Of course this cannot be, such a thing is impossible to see spiritual forces in corporeal states. Why is this easier here for us? because we already know how many forces of nature that we don’t see. For example the magnetic force, the electrical forces, we don’t see them, but we can discover them with the help of other instruments, devices. But in previous times, 200 or 300 years ago and more, people were not aware of it. So, everything that they heard about spiritual forces, they very quickly wanted to materialize them and to discover them in corporeality.
Excerpt #37 continues (01:03:18)
42. R. (01:04:18) In other words, this is what he troubled to do in the wisdom of Kabbalah, to turn it into such a form of study that people will not be able to be confused, will not be able to imagine that they are studying about angels above and all kind of figures that might imagined that exists here, next to us, in this world. But on the contrary, everything will be clear to them that it is about internal forces within man, internal. Just as we learned in our five senses about the still, vegetative and animate around us, so we can study spiritual forces which we cannot see but sense within us, too. Meaning our whole work in explaining the wisdom of Kabbalah. The wisdom of Kabbalah is the wisdom of perception; to grasp, to perceive reality, the real reality. A part of it we can grasp with sight, smell, and touch with our five physical senses, and the part that we cannot perceive, the rest of the forces, we have to develop additional instruments for them and then we will perceive them too. This is what we learn, and this is what we yearn for.
43. S. (01:06:14) Today in the tens, what should we be afraid of?
R. Today we should be afraid of deflecting from the course that we constantly mention. Which is coming closer to each other and that approaching, nearing that we aim to bring it to the Creator. We have two things: To unite and to direct the unity to the Creator, that’s it. Everything else doesn’t concern us, really, it doesn’t exist, everything else belongs to this world, to corporeal arrangements and all those things. We ourselves are only for connection and in the direction towards the Creator. From between us and to the Creator.
44. S. (01:07:20) In article 36 we read that: Mercy and love will not see the world before Israel will have the intention to bestow contentment before their Maker. Do you think now is the time for Israel to have the intention to bestow or still not yet?
R. We are on the way. Israel means anyone who yearns to reach the Creator, Yashar El, and I really hope that we are approaching that goal and we will begin to feel it and discover it soon and we will realize it. We will realize it. The important thing is not to be afraid at all and to not quit, keep going forever until the Complete Redemption; in this life, in the spiritual life, in this world and in the spiritual world, never-mind; just keep going, just keep going until the end of Correction.
45. S. (01:08:39) What are the new additional vessels with which we cover the forces that are outside of us?
R. There are vessels that should awaken us except they are not revealed, and by being drawn to one another and to the Creator, the Creator reveals between us forms of connections which actually already exist, those connections except we don’t feel them. is just as looking at a map and then you increase the resolution, more and more and more and suddenly you see that there are many roads, many details on the map; this is how we discovered through our yearning for connection, forms of connection that exists between us and those forms of connection, we begin to see many, many details of the connection between us, which are actually the spiritual vessels, and in that vessel we discovered the Creator. How does He sustain this vessel? How He is revealed in them? and then we don’t look at the map itself anymore but through the map we reveal the Creator; we look at how we reveal the Creator more tangibly, in a more tactile way; we become Incorporated with Him, living with Him. It is just like looking at a map on the computer and changing the resolution of it. This is how we approach it.
46. S. (01:11:30) As we read in the articles: that we have to blow the shofar of the Messiah with dissemination, and I feel that somehow in our organization we are not investing for the future generations, I mean for the young generations. On the international scale we don’t have any contact, any target, any dissemination project that targets the young generations, which is our future. What do you think about this and how can we Implement new contacts for the young generations?
R. We need to in the meantime, learn a lot and understand what we have in the wisdom of Kabbalah. What is the demand, what is the need of the younger generations and then we should try to bring the two closer? At the beginning of my way I wrote about it but that was 40 years ago, maybe even before. I wrote several books for beginners. If you can also write but in a very simple way, so it is clear and simple to anyone, to men to women. I don’t think that we should do it for children but at least for men and women, and for both. Try. try it, it’s good.
S. We started a young YouTube show in Turkey, and we had great success. More than 1500 people in Turkey watched it, and somehow I feel that the young people especially, feel a great emptiness in their lives, especially in that matter. There’s a need, there’s a huge space and when I came to this path there were not many people in Turkey that study Kabbalah, I was alone, but they started to come and now we are about 3,000-3,500 young people in Turkey, and I feel the necessity in it. Maybe somehow we can do something about it?
R. Of course we can do a lot, a whole lot to it. I really hope you will do it. Besides, you have all the conditions now in Turkey, a developing generation, a strong nation and instruments, technology, good communication everywhere. We also have a translation that is done by our friends in Turkey, in Turkish and in English, Turkish is somewhat close to English. So, go ahead, do it by all means.
47. S. (01:15:28) Should we see the physical nations as a creation of the Creator, as something we have as a barrier we need to overcome?
