Baal HaSulam. One Commandment

Reading One Commandment from the beginning. (00:22 – 01:43)

1. S. (01:45) We just read this, and earlier we were saying we were talking about what a person does for society, the friend also brought his example of translating the books. If a person says in our society that “I invest my time to help the created beings, I translate, I translate lessons”, that isn’t accounted that, by this, he does a spiritual action if he wants to be a conduit to all of humanity?

R. Well, maybe, so what’s the question?

S. My question is what makes an action ,a corporeal action, turn it into a spiritual action?

R. If his true intention is for the well-being of other people, instead of using his will to receive for himself he uses his desire in order to bestow to everyone all the goodness, this is considered that he is becoming a spiritual person.

2. S. (03:27) What’s a good deed on the speaking degree?

R. A good deed in the speaking degree is when he relates to all created beings in the way the Creator does, the highest degree you’re talking, yes? This is considered that he is in adhesion with the Creator, equivalence of form with the Creator.

3. S. (04:06) So what’s actually a commandment, a Mitzvah?

R. A commandment is a command from the Creator for a person to be like Him, it is written “return to the Creator, your Lord”.

S. He says that “I’m turning the whole world to the scale of merit”, that’s a Mitzvah?

R. Yes.

S. Why, by sentencing the whole world to the scale of merit, why is that a commandment, why did He do it in that way?

R. The Creator did everything in order to give people opportunities, possibilities to overcome their egoistic desires that He created in them, and that they will come through this overcoming the intention and the action in order to bestow to each other. And when they reach such a state that they bestow to each other, until they love each other, they truly become like the Creator.

S. So, the Creator organized friends that in my attitude towards them I will want to sentence them to the scale of merit but that is supposedly only the first state, that the goal, in the end, that I will be able to sentence the Creator to the scale of merit?

R. The Creator is General, it’s the general. 

4. S. (06:10) I want to scrutinize the trend about the corporeal action towards the society: If I could check that in the action, itself, there’s support in the will to receive so it’s not a spiritual action anymore?

R. I don’t know what you mean?

S. I did an action for society, if there’s any support in the will to receive, if there’s honor or something mixed up in it, so it’s not a spiritual action anymore?

R. It may be.

S. Is there a way to check it, like if we check a necessary action we say, “if you add an ability to get rid of it, you’d be happy”.

R. Yes, it depends on the form of coarseness that you’re using. 

5. S. (07:08) I don’t know if it’s exactly about this but your teacher wrote, not only him, it’s written in so many places that not everybody was born with all NRNHY, we talked about qualities that you got at birth, no, not everybody got all the five right?

R. I don’t know what to answer, each and everyone has a place in the end of correction.

S. Yes but, if not everybody was born with those five vessels so there’s all kinds of Gmar Tikkun not what we’re aiming towards.

R. No, no, no, for everyone, everyone has room in the end of Correction, Gmar Tikkun.

S. Are there different types of the end of Correction?

R. There are types but everyone has to come to that.

S. If a person has the more of those five so he less and less needs the external society to keep him on the path?

R. The thing is that we’re not working in order to receive but in order to bestow, meaning as much as each one can help the others, then he becomes greater. That’s why it’s not the same calculation as you’re doing with the vessels of reception.

S. But the deficiency itself will force him?

R. Yes.

S. In a way that he doesn’t depend on the external society that much?

R. No, it’s actually the opposite; through connecting all the external environment to him and bestowing to them, bringing them closer to the Creator, that’s his reward.

S. I’m not speaking about bestowing, I’m talking about qualities from birth; you said that if somebody was born with a quality, it has nothing to do with bestowal, you are born with a certain deficiency, a certain vessel. So that vessel is divided into five, right, all of the NRNHY.

R. Yes?

S. So he writes that there’s some people that were not born with all the NRNHY, that all the five but less.

R. But later with incorporation everyone can get all of NRNHY, there’s an incorporation.

S. But then the vessel still doesn’t change, the fact that they are incorporating, yes there’s an impression, but it doesn’t live in them, it’s not in them?

R. I was born without a sense for music but I live in a world that is being used, there’s music, this composition, yes?

S. So you enjoy it.

R. I enjoy something to a certain extent, I’m incorporated in it.

S. But not that it’s living in you, it doesn’t exist in you.

R. To a certain extent it is in me, that’s how we all are, we are incorporated with everyone else.

S. So a person has all five, let’s say a vessel that has all five, so that he’s going to be less dependent on people in order to reach the goal.

R. On the contrary, more, because through him all those five different forms of bestowal are passing to the whole world; in bestow it’s the opposite of reception.

S. If I was born with the five parts, five desires, those five vessels, so my deficiency will be stronger than a person who doesn’t have all five.

R. That’s correct?

S. So will that keep that person who has the five parts on the path more than a person who doesn’t have the five parts?

R. In the meantime, but later, he will want to also use all these five parts even though he doesn’t have it because he will see it in everyone else because we are all incorporated in each other. And then he will envy everyone and through the envy, lust, and honor, he will get from them their vessels and he will have to fill them.

S. And that means?

R. Filling through connecting to each other and helping each other. 

6. S. (12:12) In the same direction about dissemination, a person who participates in dissemination, how does he choose what role to do it , it could be his profession, it could be things that he’s good at, that he got from his own nature or it could be a place where he has to overcome the most, how do you choose?

R. I don’t know, this is the secrets of the trade, I don’t know.

S. You told us a few years ago that ‘you were rewarded thanks to dissemination’.

R. Yes.

S. So how can every student who wants that, how can they know where to place himself in dissemination?

R. I don’t know, I also didn’t know, it was simply my opportunity that if I will write, it will be accepted.

S. How can a friend know that he’s in the right place in dissemination?

R. I don’t know, it’s in the air, one person goes and does it, the other doesn’t, you’re asking me about the muse.

S. How do I know that I’m performing a duty that is beneficial for dissemination, also on behalf of dissemination and behalf on my or our spiritual advancement as a the group?

R. I don’t know, you have to pray to the Creator to open it up for you, this understanding, if you want it so much, if it’s part of you and it’s part of your destiny, I have nothing to add. Why are you looking at me as if I’m some angel?

S. Let’s say there’s people who have very unique professions that society needs but they’d rather go work in the kitchen, how can you do such a thing?

R. I don’t know, ask them?

S. Is that right, shouldn’t we as a society, ‘look you have this ability’?

R. Yes, you can force them to work in what the society needs, yes.

S. Where is the exertion of the person in dissemination?

R. Besides exertion, you have to be, each person has to be in the right place, otherwise it will just confuse others and burn his time up.

S. The right place means where a person thinks?

R. Where he can do good to others. 

7. S. (15:30) I think continuing the friend’s words, it’s questions that we’re dealing with a lot during the years and we got to an understanding that a friend can’t let his will to receive and manage himself. The needs of our society are very diverse and many of them, that’s why this place has a manager and this place has a manpower department. And the best thing is that if a person really wants to implement his potential, he should put himself before society and say “take me and do whatever you want and make whatever you want of me, where can I help”, and there, for sure he will be the most effective.

R. That’s correct, that’s true. 

8. S. (16:39) What turns a dissemination action into a spiritual action, what’s the condition?

R. The goal.

S. It could be that the goal is corporeal or spiritual?

R. Of course, if I publish books to make money, so it’s a corporeal goal.

S. Yes, but the goal is defined by all of society, our organization, and if a person works in dissemination according to the conditions he was born with, we still said that we’re lacking still for it to be a spiritual action. So I’m asking on behalf of man, what is the condition that what he is doing will be a spiritual action?

R. His goal, his intention, what is he doing this for, what is he trying to attain in his life?

S. How can you make sure that that’s really his goal, he could say I don’t know somebody disseminating here and not for the spiritual goal but maybe they’re mistaking?

R. So he grows and by that he examines every time his intention ,his intentions, his goal and are the correct or not.

S. How could we use society to make sure?

R. You’re asking questions in the air, how can, try? 

S.It’s scary to approach an action of dissemination and to not do it with the direction of the goal, so I want to make sure that we’re holding on to it very tightly before we go to any action of dissemination.

R. If you’re doing it out of the society, out of the connection, out of the scrutiny every time with your friends, then it may be, usually, that you’re not mistaken, that’s it. I don’t want to hear these questions anymore. Did you hear? What about the article, we read five lines.

9. S. (19:15) Baal HaSulam describes two things that man does here: either the necessities or to help the public. So where is the ten in all of those actions because he doesn’t mention it, and it sounds, according to what happened here in the last two hours that we’re talking that that area of working with the friends in the ten, that is what will help me jump to the spiritual degree from all this corporeal work, so I’m asking why is it not here? The first commandment he’s saying that ‘save the oppressed, necessities’, why doesn’t he say work with the friends, I’m asking, I don’t know?

R. Working with your friends is a very restricted thing that happens in the special society, here he’s talking about humanity, the world. You understand this, read what he writes.

S. I understand but again I’m trying to take something here for us, not for the world the world. Maybe the world will hear this lesson one day and it will interest them; for now we’re speaking about us, how do we advance?

R. Yes.

S. So I have two things that I can do now: necessities and to help the oppressed, and I have the ten in the middle there. So from what I heard from you in the lesson, the place that will help me advance spiritually in the right direction is specifically working with the friends in the ten.

R. Yes.

S. For sure not necessities and probably not to save the oppressed that can be very confusing, is that right?

R. Yes.
