Part 2:
The 15th of Av: the Day of Love – Selected Excerpts from the Sources. #5
Reading Excerpt #5 (00:18) “There is self love and there is…” Twice.
1. S. (03:03) I want to understand, a gentile is someone who wants to be a Jew meaning in love of others?
R. Yes.
S. So we start in this that as he says here I don’t want to do to the friend what is hated by me?
R. We start even earlier than that.
S. What does that mean way before?
R. You check your state relative to others how much you are in a better state compared to everyone.
S. What does it mean don’t do to others what you hate? How does that compare to loving him?
R. That you perform a restriction over yourself and before you do something to a friend, you check which you have, who do you want to receive such an attitude from each and every one who surround you, from people around you. This is a very practical form, extremely practical. Whereby if we relate to reality in this way, and then each time we will discover how that reality upgrades its attitude towards us, more, and more, and more. Demand of us and come to recognize the evil, the evil of our own nature.
2. S. (05:07) It says here that there is self love and there is love of the Creator and there is a medium, a middle ground, which is love of others. How can you say that it is a medium? It sounds like self love is one thing, and love of others and love of the Creator is entirely like there’s nothing in the middle? Like two opposites, two different sides? And it says here that there is a medium between the love of others, a medium between love of himself and love of the Creator?
R. Why do you think this is so?
S. Love of friends and love of the Creator almost the same thing, no?
R.That is self-love.
S. Self-love is a different nature right?
R. Okay so what is the question?
S. The question is, is love of friends truly in the middle?
R. No, but it’s on the way though and I can imagine that I’m still an egoist and it is still worthwhile for me to love with her friends because through them I come to various states, better states. And then I advance so I see that that making a change towards the friends I can change myself.
3. S. (07:07) What is the connection between loving the others and reaching love of the Creator? To this all the Torah and wisdom is in one’s heart?
R. Through all of the Torah and all of the wisdom in one’s heart is in the condition that he reaches love of others.
S. Then what is the connection? How can it be that from love the whole Torah is in one’s heart from loving the others?
R. Yes, how can it not be this way? His heart becomes from the will to receive to the will to bestow, from hate to love, and that he is in the process of coming closer of connecting to all the people in the world.
S. So why is wisdom revealed to him? All of the wisdom of the Torah and he understands everything?
R. Yes, because wisdom is the wisdom of connection between everyone. All of the science and all of the wisdom and culture, education, whatever you want to talk about, it all has to do with, and is connected to, and comes out of, how you bring people closer, the closeness of the hearts.
S. So he wouldn’t have a need to study, just out of loving?
R. No, of course not, you will see it from nature. How can I be any other way if we do not love each other? What would happen? There would surely be separation and ruin.
S. The question is, how can it be that knowledge comes to flow in one’s heart from love?
R. From acquiring these qualities of connection and love. Help him ask.
4. S. (09:37) Yesterday if I’m not mistaken in the afternoon lesson, he said that we have nothing to learn really about nature and that it is all love.
R. Yes.
S. So what can we take from nature? Because if I understood correctly, love is the nature of the Creator. So what do I want to take from this, to learn from this nature?
R. If I come to a point where my heart opens up, and I accept all of reality inside of my heart this means that I come to complete adhesion with the Creator.
5. S. (10:42) It is also written in the Torah if I’m not mistaken if all who fear me the Torah is all in one’s heart, so what is the connection between these two qualities of fear and love?
R. If we haven’t corrected fully our will to receive to be in order to bestow to the other, meaning in order to connect all of the parts of creation into one structure, then we have this internal warning, this internal warning to grow caution, to ensure that the structure will not come crumbling down. That it is separate parts would be drawn together, connected, and in this way, we’ll reach correction.
S. What structure?
R. The general structure of reality. The will to receive the Creator created and we need to connect this will to receive to a single system called Adam HaRishon. From the created being side in the same system like the Creator is up there we call it the system of Adam HaRishon.
S. So if the system is important to me, and it is important for me to fullfill it, to maintain it, that is called I have fear of the Creator? Is there connection between those things?
R. I have connection to this fear of the Creator when I wish to build a system who is entirely going to keep this law of unity, of connection.
S. So a person who fears the Creator is a person who wants to fulfill and maintain the system?
R. Yes.
S. That it will ultimately be able to receive the light of the Creator? The structure is important to him where the Creator can exist in it and it’s Neshama, the structure, and that is what fulfills love of others?
R. Yes.
6. S. (13:34) You said before regarding not to do to one’s friend what’s hated upon oneself, that I want to check if the friend wants to and receives the same attitude that I want to receive, but this is on the way to spirituality? Is this correct? And when we listen to the questions and answers in the lessons, I feel my heart opening up, even just reading them I have feelings of inner Impressions when I am reading Baal HaSulam or Rabash I feel like my heart is more shut to their writings.
R. No translation.
S. As there we feel limits, so how can we open up our hearts more to the articles of the Kabbalists?
R. I think that we need to more and more and he needs to feel himself obligated, connected, committed to the friends where if you take upon yourself the condition whereby you must bring him to the end of correction, this will help you.
7. S. (15:34) I just wanted to add here that my yearning causes this too. When we read the preparation, being that we gathered here for love of friends, all of my yearning is that it would be soaked into every soul. And then this yearning, this prayer, for going above reason, I should add this yearning to enter you, it adds very much.
R. We are on the seam, on the border between Lo Lishma and Lishma. Let’s hope that we will soon be able to feel it working on us.
8. S. (16:28) There is one who asks for honor and there is one who asks for godliness. Why does one who demand for godliness necessitate great concessions?
R. Because it is a lot more than simply asking for honor.
S. Okay then how do we go from being narrow sided to open-hearted?
R. By connecting in the correct environment.
S. Okay the Tzimtzum, restriction, screen and reflected light allow me to eat from the tree of reason, the corrected light?
R. Yes.
9. S. (17:39) What does it mean that we are on the seam between Lo Lishma and Lishma?
R. That we need to try and feel through our efforts what can that state of Lishma be.
S. What are we looking to describe and to pick to ourself?
R. Whatever we see in the articles, what is the state called Lishma?
S. You said that it needs to work on us. Are we supposed to expect it or will it just work on us?
R. It has to be clarified in each and everyone and in this mutual influence between everyone it
should influence everyone.
S. What are we looking for in the articles when we are reading, like in the Rabash articles?
R. Look for depictions of Lishma. It is recommended that we bring them to the lesson and read it before everyone. These examples should be before us.
S. I wrote here what you said before, that we want to feel more obligated to their friends that you are obligated to bring them to the end of correction?
R. Yes, of course. No one will be able to make it without the help of all the friends.
S. So I need to depict ahead of me the state of the end of correction, that’s what we need to reach?
R. Yes, but what does it mean? There has to be mutuality here. Arvut, mutual guarantee. the complete mutual guarantee.
S. And that’s what lacks the sensation of Arvut?
R. Maybe it is not felt, but it will be felt in us as a necessary thing.
10. S. (19:51) In what does the Kabbalist love the others?
R. In that they are parts of his soul and by connecting them to himself, he comes to the revelation of the soul and inside the soul the revelation of the Creator.
S. He needs to see first of all that there’s a part of his the soul?
R. No, it’s certain that everyone is like that, there’s no question there, the fact that he doesn’t see it he doesn’t see it, but he needs to accept a priority that all these created beings are parts of his soul.
S. Meaning those who seem the most disconnected to me?
R. There’s no such thing.
11. S. (21:06) Love of the Creator is the result in our work of love of others, not something we work on directly?
R. Love of the Creator is an outcome of love of others.
S. So if we work on love of others than a person can check and ask himself, and I check by asking myself if I love the Creator or not?
R. Yes.
S. How does a person then relate to the ten, when he wants to present this connected vessel to the Creator, how is this connected to love of the Creator?
R. Again. I don’t understand.
S. The vessel a person connects to his ten and he wants to connect and present it to the Creator and to serve it to the Creator, so this is like a gift that we’re giving to the Creator in love?
R. It’s a collection of desire that used to be at odds and a person who’s not able to work with all of them at all because they’re full of conflicts and oppositions; but now that they’re all aimed at one Creator, then they work toward him as a single desire. The goal is one, and it connects to different desires into one.
S. That like gives the created being the opportunity to express love?
R. Yes, express love because I have importance for bestowing to the Creator more than the importance of bestowing from one desire to the next and not even in connecting all those desires with one desire and to fill it. If it’s not clear please ask.
12. S. (23:24) Sorry that last sentence wasn’t clear to me, you said that it’s more important to bestow to the Creator then to bestow from desire to desire and connect it as one vessel, what does that mean?
R. The are many such states where Rabash would say something not clear. You say what did he say and when he was asked again about it, he said ‘I wanted this to be in the air’.
S. But you said to ask so I asked.
R. So you asked, so fine. After some time, you will repeat the same things and you’ll understand and feel it and realize it and it will be part of your path.
Reading Excerpt #6 (24:56) “And this is what…”
13. S. (26:37) Regarding the task you gave us to look for depictions of Lishma in the writings of the Kabbalist Rabash and Baal HaSulam, what is this dependent on our ability as a ten to find these connections?
R. I don’t know it started with how much you want to look for it and connect to such depictions and for such illustrations will reformat you from within, on your desires, your thoughts, and your interconnections, that’s it.
S. Our connection in the ten, like the higher the level of the connection it can help us find the depictions more?
R. Yes, of course.
14. S. (27:45) In the previous excerpt it says that love of friends as a medium between self-love and love of the Creator, is there a connection between this medium and what we call the middle line?
R. This is tough, it’s tough. It’s like in math we need to perform a few actions in order to reach a state where we can equate one with the other, we will do it at one point.
15. S. (28:31) Can I ask the connection between the 9th and the 15th of Av?
R. Yes.
S. Is it correct to see the 9th of Av as the posterior of the 15th of Av? If a person prepares himself correctly on the 9th of Av and correct prayer and lack, then on the 15th of Av the day of love he will receive the results?
R. Yes, there’s something there.
16. S. (29:06) What’s the difference between love of others and love of friends and what can I demand from the friends that I cannot demand from others?
R. From the friends you can demand everything, with the friends you are in this connection where you connect as one man with one heart and there’s nothing concealed between you, it’s not right away, but ultimately yes that’s what you are headed towards and you wish to be in one heart, meaning in this entire system, which will connect him.
S. What does it mean it will be concealed from one another?
R. In the ten, we can behave in the most open way possible as long as it’s coordinated correctly with our advancement towards the complete correction and that’s it.
S. And regarding the others are they entirely to be closed up and concealed, their attitude is completely different, is that being the final goal?
R. About the other, we have to be arranged very comfortably relative to them not that we are opposite to them, and we hate them, and reject them, repel them, no we are ready to help and bring them closer.
S. Ultimately all of our exertion in love of friends is aimed at others to reach love of others?
R. Yes.
S. So that is the attitude?
R. Yes.
17. S. (31:25) Especially after the Congress we’ve been through, there’s a lot more warmth in the group and love between the friends. How can we preserve it so we don’t lose it?
R. We don’t need to keep it or guard it, rather to advance it more and more and more.
S. How?
R. How? You need to reach a state where you fear from this that the group can fall apart in your eyes, that would be a tragedy a true tragedy, that not this world, not the next world, nothing, everything disappears from you and you are thrown out of the entire system of the world’s and the souls and you have nothing, no place.
S. Remember you cautioned me on this. I didn’t understand what it means to have this fear, but now I do.
R. It’s a sign you’ve advanced, very nice.
18. S. (32:45) There’s natural love between us and then there’s love that we cultivate. Is the example of a mother and child can teach us how to work in the ten?
R. We cannot express this in one sentence. How we need to reach a state that each one worries for his friend like his own baby, that each one worries for all of humanity like his group, and all of us together, come closer to loving the Creator like the center of our entire existence and that’s it.
19. S. (33:55) It says love your friend as yourself, but there is a state where you don’t love yourself let’s say sometimes people don’t relate nicely to you and you do not understand how you got to that state.
R. It’s still love. It’s still love.
Reading Excerpt #7 (34:34) “Love of friends that is based…”
20. R. (35:11) Meaning it doesn’t come from the person, himself, towards the others in a manner that he demands from them, rather that he fills them.
21. S. (35:30) It seems like there’s this depiction of the world Kli that we’re all in it this horizontal line, on the one side you have self-love and on the other side you have love of the Creator, and where each one is, that place, on the one side is how we’re ready to surrender and accept faith above reason, and against that, there’s fear and shame and protections and we’re having a hard time moving it?
R. Right.
S. We all come here, we all believe and come to the morning lesson, what can make the leap?
R. Support, support. That you, and this that you free yourself in such things, from keeping them, you allow your friends and you give them all the freedom of action and then you can be free yourself.
22. S. (36:40) I wanted to ask about this edition called ‘love’, how does it add anything when you have love of friends, why is it not enough to just be friends?
R. ‘Love of friends’ is called that there is connection between us that is above all limitations, above all revelations, negative or positive, could be it doesn’t matter. That this connection is, I don’t know how to say it, it is from the most upper force that could be in nature, that if we would take all of nature then their connections and connections and all sorts of levels of still vegetative, animate, and speaking, more, and more, and more. But the connection that comes, that we get by love, is connection that, I don’t know how to say it, it’s above self-calculation, above self-love, I don’t know how to say it. Connection by love is a connection that cannot be checked and cannot be changed, it’s all above all the rules of nature.
S. What is this ‘love’, and how do you add love to the connection between the friends, how do you add love?
R. In this that we draw the Creator to connection between us and we want to reveal the Creator and we want to place Him in the connection between us.
S. But also even with the Creator, this is what we call ‘love of the Creator’, so what are you add here, Creator on top of the Creato? What is this addition of adding love in the connection?
R. That it’s above all calculations, above all conditions, that it has no limit and no restriction.
S. No restriction in what?
R. To obligation, to support, that ‘love covers all’.
S. And what is love of the Creator, what is that addition of love in from the Creator?
R. ‘Love of the Creator’ is that from it, we drink the love between us, that out of love of the Creator for us we can receive a bit of sparks, that they will connect all the parts that are in opposition to begin with.
S. That addition of love is something that you activate or how do we, how do you add love to these connections?
R. We demand this love to exist in the connection between us.
S. Is the addition of love something the Creator does through the demand, I’m trying to understand what is love in the system, where is this thing taking place?
R. The love in the system is because it emanates from the most upper root and so the connection with this upper root remains there.
S. And the ability to bring about love is something the Creator gives us?
R. Yes, of course.
S. So in the actions that we do with one another in our attempts to connect, what Rabash writes to us, that we have to reach love of friends, what does He want from us?
R. He wants that we will reach that same connection between us like He wants to be connected with us.
S. It’s not a connection where now your friends with someone, it sounds much deeper.
R. That we will learn from this His connection with us, which is above nature.
S. Where does it take place, this love of friends because we are here in nature, in this world, where does this love of friends exist?
R. No, that’s already upper force, it’s already from the world of Atzilut.
S. So how do we make it so love of friends will exist between us, it’s such an exalted thing, every word you say makes it sound even more exalted so how can we even come to it?
R. We can invite Him, to draw Him, to ask but not that we control Him, But out of this, that specifically in this force we have been created, formed and exist, thus we can, on the other hand, also to awaken it, to recognize it.
S. When Rabash started to write the articles, why did he choose to start with something so exalted “Called Love of Friends”, why did he go for that as the first thing?
R. Because this is what builds us, it gives us a foundation for existence and we have nothing besides this in what to succeed, only in this the Creator relates to us to begin with in absolute love, unconditional love.
23. S. (44:24) We know that in the Second Temple, they wrote that “they simply ate each other up”, they blew up the city from within; and we know that the students of Rabbi Shimon, they came to a state where they wanted to burn one another. Where in that sickening state of hate can this inversion come?
R. When you reach the end of the hate, then you reveal the love, it’s one thing and it’s opposite that exists in such points, in such points. It’s said that, “women would cook and eat their children”, that only in such a manner we’d be able to reveal the height of their love.
24. S. (45:54) Only when there’s love of friends in the entire ten, only then can you discover love of the Creator?
R. Yes.
S. Meaning is this a condition?
R. Yes, love of the Creator, you learn out of what occurs to you in love of friends; if you didn’t have all such states love, hate, efforts, exertion and love of friends. That many times you will fall from it and get up again, without that you will not know how to reveal the love of friends, and within love of friends, you still need to reveal more love of the Creator.
S. But love of the Creator is only when there are ten friends love each other and there in the middle the love of the Creator is revealed?
R. Yes let’s say, ten, also, is just a number.
S. Can we make the Creator envious of our connection and invite Him to us using that?
R. That the Creator will be jealous of the connection between us?
S. Yes, in the love between us.
R. How would He be jealous?
S. If we drew Him in then we loved one another He would also want to be there.
R. But all that we receive and the place stand up in the connection between us, it all comes from Him?
S. So how do we attract Him, It looks like love of friends is something that we inflate between us until a certain point where the Creator enters into it and clothes into it?
R. Meaning as much as we want, to the extent that we want to relate to each other in love, above all calculations, despite that they stand out to us, to our eyes, right, and we want to be above them; accordingly, we can in these two opposite forms of hate and love that I revealed to us, we can then recognize the Creator that includes both of them.
S. And this is called the prayer?
R. Yes, think and ask more.
25. S. (49:11) Can we feel simultaneously fear and love?
R. Yes, love without fear does not exist in the created beings.
S. Which is the most powerful action that can help us reach love of friends, what is the most powerful action?
R. That we help one another in attaining this term of love in mutual support, in mutual support.
26. S. (50:19) In the first article we read, Rabash also speaks of love, we need to sign a covenant during the love and then when the spies come you should rise above them and surround them and cover them. The restriction here is not to spies and not to do to your friend that which you do not like but to a spy on the friend and see the faults?
R. This is still a very weak degree.
S. Everything that Rabbi Akiva and the friends who quote everything comes from the Torah that Moses gave us, and I remember it’s written there “don’t hate your brother in your heart”, and “you shall rebuke your fellow friend so you won’t carry out his sin”. And now people ask here if a friend doesn’t wake up for the lesson, when we look at it does it mean that we’re spying on it or not, what does it mean that we need to bring things out and talk about them so that they don’t remain inside, like this hatred that just festers inside like you judge the friend and inside this point is devouring us from within.
R. We’ll need to reach this from a different direction, not directly, as you are approaching it.
27. S. (52:22) Maybe from a different perspective: We speak of the attitude to the friends, to the group, to the Creator, all kinds of things, love and hate that are revealed, we see revelation, unprecedented revelation of hate in Israel, very diificult energies in the streets.
R. You are talking about what is happening in the streets, you need to make the streets wider so they want be so tight.
S. It’s happening the homes, our families are being torn apart, some people are leaving the country, what’s the correct attitude towards that?
R. I don’t know, I don’t think that we need to do anything besides explain to them that we are getting closer to corrections, and in order to perform the correct corrections we need to feel in states that we go through, that it’s intolerable, and then we will take it more seriously and advance step by step.
S. What’s our inner attitude here?
R. Between us?
S. How do I relate that I know from within my attitude I might change things?
R. No, between us here, there cannot be any change, we need only to see that we are all drawn to correction, to resembling the Creator in connection between us, that we want to reveal that same system of mutual bestowal that’s unlimited that’s called Boreh, Creator, and that’s how we will advance, I have no doubt in that.
S. You spoke of the revelation of evil and we see that there’s a very big revelation of evil, what’s happening in Israel?
R. It’s revelation of truth, “I’m happy in the wicked that are revealed because those that are not revealed are in zero hope of being corrected”, as you remember from Baal HaSulam. And so we are revealing what already existed, that’s it what already was. No such something is not revealed and it wasn’t in us, really. Rather it was in us and we will advance and will reveal more and more and things that are truly, that will not surprise us.
S. And then when this evil is revealed, what do we do with it?
R. Kiss it!
S. It’s not simple to kiss the evil if you truly suffer, if it’s just lip service I can say, “fine, I’m kissing it”?
R. Well then, it’s not really evil, ‘evil’ is called that you can’t even look at it from afar, more so to get closer or to touch or to try to change it somehow. But when we are all together connecting and getting closer to this evil, then we begin to see that specifically, in such a manner, you can turn this evil to good and that’s how we will do it; and thus it is not immediately revealed, there are many stages here.
28. S. (57:02) You told us a story when you were traveling to Rabash in our country [translation fell out] You cannot ignore what’s happening, the state is not good and I have these thoughts, if Rabash would look at what is happening now and see this raging hatred in the streets over nothing really, what would he think about it, what would he demand of his students?
R. I don’t know what to tell you, only what seems to me, that we wouldn’t do anything, there is still no recognition of evil. So each one wants to control his evil, these are usual things, and when will we be able to say something with all this? When the audience will be ready to hear and there are many stages that the audience needs to go through. Until then they need to reach despair, they need to see that what they think their method that doesn’t bring anything and so on and so on.
S. By the way, it’s coming up a lot on the campus, students that were teaching are trying to connect these things. In some way do we need to include it in our prayers and our meetings, do we need to relate to it somehow in the ten?
R. Yes, nonetheless if the Creator brings it to us for our matter of the day, then we need to pay attention to it but it’s still not in such a level that we can really advise what to do and really express our opinion, no, we haven’t reached recognition of evil, nobody in any manner.
S. It should pain us, we should aspire to have some attitude towards this thing?
R. The attitude is simple: Besides love, love covers all crimes, we don’t want to expect anything else, we are forbidden.
29. S. (01:00:14) This recognition of evil, where a person says, “the hate that I feel towards the other harms me more than anything else”, meaning I hate the hate that I feel towards the other, is that approaching recognition of evil?
R. Let’s say.
S. A person would rather die than admit that something is wrong with him, where is the boundary where he will agree to it?
R. He will determine the border, don’t worry, he will determine it, these are small things.
30. S. (01:00:56) Yesterday in the morning lesson, I had a very special state, I sat alone in the lesson, it took some time before the friends joined and I started the preparation for the lesson with the virtual friends. I opened in the heart and I said to the friends in the virtual world “how much I missed the friends around the table”, it’s really an unpleasant feeling. And one of the friends told me, “I have pity on you that you are alone there”, how do we relate to them, is this love?
R. It’s not love but he’s participating in your sorrow.
S. But how do I relate to it?
R. That he wants to understand you and can get closer to you.
31. S. (01:02:04) Regarding how I need to love the friends and it’s not how the friends need to love me, does it mean that I can feel myself close to all the friends, even to the same friend who’s distant from me, meaning can the closeness be not mutual?
R. You still can’t check it yes.
S. Should I nevertheless want to bring the friend closer?
R. Of course, of course, I must want to bring every one of the friends in the world Kli closer to me.
S. If, for example, I love the friend and I see that he doesn’t want to come closer and I really exert force?
R. Of course not, of course not, only in the same extent that he is prepared for such a mutual action.
32. S. (01:03:15) A question about excerpt number six, it says that “of course he loves himself with all of his heart and soul but with the Creator he can deceive himself”, how can he deceive himself the Creator?
R. We still need to check this.
33. S. (01:03:50) Can we say that love of friends is a structural element of Adam HaRishon?
R. Yes, surely, it’s the foundation of his entire structure.
34. S. (01:04:15) What does it mean to give the friend the freedom of action, the freedom from what?
R. Freedom of action or faith?
S. Freedom of action.
R. To give the friends freedom of action, it’s to give them freedom to act on me however they want, however they want.
S. You said that if the friend decides something, the result obligates all the friends in the ten, so if, for example, we decided that we are all participating in the lesson from our room and there’s a friend who’s used to connecting to the general room, and she’s in the lesson not with us but in the general room that contains friends from other tens. Does it influence the ten or is it okay that she watches over there and not with us?
R. It’s better that she should connect with us more and more and she will get used to it after a few times she will get used to it and she will not have any problems to connect to our group.
35. S. (01:05:43) All day long, we speak of love of friends and the holiday of ‘love’ speaks of the love between man and a woman, can you explain why specifically in this time when we celebrate the connection between the man and woman even through we specifically in our work is love of friends, that is the main work we have to do?
R. No, I can’t get into this, we can talk a lot about it with many words and songs and poetry and whatnot but I still don’t tie love of friends and love of genders. Of course that a man and a woman can help one another in a very, very special manner in climbing all the way to bringing Malchut, to the Creator but it’s still not for us, I’ll tell you that, it’s still not for us. And in general, it’s still not for our world, we still don’t understand what our role is in the sexes and genders, in bringing childbirth and all of these things, it still takes time.
S. This special structure of man as a masculine part and a feminine part of receiving and bestowing, is that connected to this holiday that we’re celebrating in order to bring us closer to this state?
R. Yes and it belongs, not only in man but in each and every kind of still, vegetative, animate and speaking in each species. You have a male and female part in a connection between them and still we have not reached the complete understanding of what form the Creator wants us to be connected in.
