Part 1:
Rabash. Article No. 41 (1991). What Should One Do If He Was Born With Bad Qualities?
1. Rav’s Introduction: (00:33) Let’s read a Rabash article. It’s a very special article. What should one do if he was born with bad qualities? If he was born with bad qualities, this actually means that if a person feels that he has an additional extra bad force it is not that he’s worse it means that he is actually ready for more spiritual work. So let’s see.
Rabash. Article 41 – 1991 (01:15) “What Should One Do If He Was Born With Bad Qualities?”
2. S. (36:43) What I got from the article is that it doesn’t matter how screwed-up the person is, if he asks the Creator to help him.
R. I didn’t understand again.
S. It doesn’t matter how worse the person thinks he is, basically that doesn’t matter at all, what matters is to just ask the Creator to help.
R.Well according to how bad he feels he is, rather what would operate him and make him turn to the Creator.
S. Yes, and the Creator as if can help any person from any state the laziest, it doesn’t matter, the worst, He will help you.
R. Yes, even me, that’s right.
S. It basically renders all of man’s labor as redundant.
R. Why?
S. Because we’re told we need to labor in the love of friends. Now I’m lazy, I don’t labor in love of friends, I’m lazy and sloppy. Ask the Creator He’ll help you even though you’re lazy, even if you’re not laboring in loving the friends.
R. So?
S. What is the law here, why doesn’t He help if I labor in loving the friends?
R. Well, in each and everyone there are a thousand different elements: how each one was born, what is his soul, how is he connected to the Creator and to others, what are his qualities? So each one has his way, his place, the way he belongs to the purpose of life.
S. Why does the Creator help the lazy ones?
R. Because he created them lazy.
3. S. (38:56) Rabash writes the meaning of punishment is that he feels suffering in being under the control of the evil inclination. Why is that called punishment, it’s actually great help?
R. Punishments are also help, of course. If a person feels uncomfortable, doesn’t feel good from a small punishment to a bigger punishment it moves him from where he is, of course it’s help.
S. Why is it punishment?
R. Because it feels unpleasant. He feels that he’s not okay, that he is weak, that he’s corrupted.
S. What is the reward?
R. His reward is accordingly as much let’s say as he will want to emerge out of it. The question is how does he emerge? Either he emerges because he wants to get rid of the feeling of the punishment or he wants to get closer to the Creator and use that punishment and he’s grateful for it. He feels good about feeling this punishment because it awakens him.
4. S. (40:18) That unsuccessful person that Rabash describes he turns to the Creator and says look, I’m not successful my friends are so great and successful so help me. Is that a spiritual request?
R. The Creator can help everyone and each one in his own form because all the sources and all the roots are in him. The fact that He helps you does not hinder Him from also helping me with different discernments.
S. Meaning that if I identify with that unsuccessful person I can turn to the Creator and say listen, the guys in my ten are awesome, the greatest of the generation. Help me, I’m the issue here.
R. Yes, maybe.
5. S. (41:22) In the article here he separates the good and bad qualities from the good and evil inclination. I don’t really understand why because from the bad inclination to say if a person is angry that can cause a corruption in the correct connection between the friends and then that creates separation. So if from the bad qualities separation can emerge how does that have nothing to do with the evil inclination?
R. I didn’t quite understand what you’re trying to say, so again.
S. The bad qualities in me?
R. What you think is bad?
S. Yes, those that come from nature like he writes in the article. He separates that from the evil inclination. Now as far as what I understand, the evil inclination is something that is against..
R. Coming closer to the Creator.
S. Getting closer to the Creator but if it’s true also getting connected with the friends, right? So if those with bad natural qualities if they can cause separation between the friends because one was angry with the other, one was lazy doing something for the other and there’s a corruption in the connection how then are these qualities unrelated to the evil inclination?
R. Again, I don’t understand.
S. Maybe if the bad qualities cause separation how could you say they have nothing to do with the evil inclination?
R. Do these qualities make us move away from the Creator and not turn to Him or not? This is what we need to see.
6. S. (43:41) He repeats a few times in the article that we have to put powers in the right place otherwise one goes completely in the wrong direction. What is then the right place?
R. The right place meaning that it will give you progress in coming closer to the friends so that together with them you can turn to the Creator and get help.
S. How do you check that your effort is in the right place before you know what the result will be?
R. Well, as much as you can. This is why our world is justified so that from the qualities that we have here we can also get closer to the Creator. We know what it means to get closer to each other, what is the group, how do we connect and out of this we continue.
7. S. (44:52) First of all this article is very thorough and I understand there’s also a lot of confusion around what he’s explaining here because a person is mostly immersed in his own qualities and he thinks that they’re responsible for him not reaching the goal. So let’s start from the end. The bottom line is how do we get rid of that confusion? Because it feels like we’re very much immersed in that, that’s really our life, these qualities and we think that this is what determines both individually and also collectively in the Ten. The lazy friends seem to us like falling behind, the other friends look like they are moving forward, it’s opposite to what he describes here. Also individually I think I’m lazy and that’s why I don’t succeed, I think I am such a sociable guy and that’s why I succeed, I am completely confused, I don’t grab hold of the right reality. How do we copy onto ourselves I don’t know, what Rabash writes here this perception?
R. The perception should be a simple one. How do we get closer to each other in order to have a single force, a single request, a single recognition of evil and from there we turn to the Creator.
S. Yes but it seems like there’s a direct relation between these qualities and our ability to turn to the Creator.
R. Well for each one it’s in his own form.
S. We’ll start from an example that a friend started with. A person who is overbearing or mad and getting really angry, how can he connect with the friends? A friend who is overbearing who is always pressuring the ten all the time, how can he be in the connection with the ten? A person who is lazy who never comes to meetings, connects late, barely opens his camera, doesn’t hear anything, at face value it seems like it harms the connection. Does it?
R. You’re saying on the face of it this is how it looks like, so I agree with you.
S. But is that a correct perception according to what we read in the article, is that correct what I said?
R. But accordingly the Creator pressures him in a different way than he does with someone else.
S. Okay what does it mean that he pushes him differently than another?
R. Well he puts more pressure on him or less or in a different style. Each one receives opposite his evil inclination the forces to awaken.
S. Okay that’s individually. What about collectively, the ten? An angry friend explodes, every meeting he….
R. Everything is measured from above, where this hot tempered friend lands, in which ten and what about the ten next to him.
S. Meaning the ten too accepts this angry friend in a..
R. Yes, he comes to some Ten, so what?
S. How do you work in the Ten? How do you work with a friend who is lazy or angry or overbearing in the Ten, how do you relate to these friends?
R. Relate to the friends in a calm way as much as possible so that time, meaning the lights that work on us from above they influence each and everyone and they establish things.
S, Yes, but for now it seems like he prevents us from reaching connection?
R. Yes, so?
S. I can’t stay calm opposite someone who seems to me to be ruining the connection systematically each time.
R. That’s on one hand but on the other hand also the participation of such friends in the ten is beneficial. It’s beneficial because their eruptions or their desires, they also add.
S. If we can summarize this, what should be the attitude of the friends in the ten to such friends that seem to have bad qualities that just hinder the connection?
R. Use them in order to connect more.
8. S.(50:07) Rabash writes here to come to understanding that we have to ask the Creator to help and then the Creator helps. How do you ask the Creator from our emotional vessels because man is an emotional being and many times we come to a bad feeling, despair, pain. How do we get to the right request that it’s not going to help me to just feel good but a right request?
R. The correct request means that we need the understanding and the power to advance correctly and this is something that we have to ask the Creator for, all of us together in the society.
S. If I ask for my pain to be eased, is that a correct request from the Creator?
R. No, because you have a different problem, the reason for why you feel bad. So you’re asking for alleviation.
S. How to be a correct partner in the friend’s negative feeling, we as friends. If a friend doesn’t feel good, he has problems. How do we..?
R. We should try to connect with him and perform actions together.
9. S. (51:50) He writes here about this phenomenon called a decree or a sentence. That the Creator does it and then if a person studies and incorporates in the ten, even if he studies for himself something happens, there’s a process. What is this sentence and what is the changing of the sentence or the verdict?
R. A sentence or a decree means that the person does something, no that’s not how we should say it. The sentence is like a condition, a law, and the Creator takes it into account and he gives help opposite that.
S. Is it the Creator who sentences?
R. Yes, of course.
S. To allow the person to respond?
R. Yes.
S. Now if it works that way we should have seen that anyone who studies in the lessons and so forth it ultimately causes him to be with us more, to get closer, not to fall and get distant or go away?
R. No, maybe it’s the opposite, the Creator gives him an opportunity to add to his effort.
S. Where is the person then? Sometimes I see veteran friends and so on and suddenly they disappear, move away, even leave. Where do they make a mistake, where is their mistake?
R. Their mistake is that they don’t understand what the Creator does. That the Creator does everything and he does everything in order to strengthen the person on the path but the person takes it as rejection.
S. But before they left they kept coming, they kept being exposed, kept being in the Ten.
R. But they did not accept the help of the Creator in the right way. Because the Creator wants to help and add to their labor he gives them worse conditions so that they’ll be able to add in their exertion and then it would be possible to save them, but they do not hear that.
S. They give up because it seems to them that He’s pushing them away?
R. Yes, exactly.
10. S. (54:46) The friend spoke from the perspective of the ten towards the friend with bad qualities. I want to ask from the perspective of the person who is lazy and we ask him to sit here and be like all the friends. So will he receive a change in his quality or he’ll be lazy until the final correction?
R. Yes, he undergoes a change.
S. There’s work on both sides here both the Ten and the person?
R. But it’s always like that yes.
S. There is a change?
R. Yes, because a person is always measured with respect to his environment.
11. S. (55:27) From the quote: for the Creator there’s no difference between having great forces or little forces, being smart or a fool, only if a person reaches the understanding that the Creator has to help him and the Creator helps. Question is what changes in man’s attitude towards the recognition of evil that leads him to start asking of the Creator?
R. When a person accepts the governance of the Creator over the whole of reality.
12. S. (56:12) About the quote, Israel had few rains, however the Creator gives the rains at the time the soil needs them. The question is, the rains can come at the right time or the wrong time, how do we make sure it comes out at the right time?
R. Well we see that. The rains that come down we see that it is rain and where it falls in a place that requires it, where we look for it or not.
S. What is it about man’s work that causes the rain to come down at the right time?
R. If a person works in the right way and he asks correctly then the rain comes down exactly in the place where the person is looking for it.
13. S. (57:04) The good inclination and evil inclination only happen when a person has a choice. How do we reach the point where we have choice?
R. Each and every moment we need to detect this choice, to do the Creator’s will or not.
14. S. (57:26) It turns out that a person when he studies in Lo Lishma the light in the Torah lets him understand what is the potion of life and the potion of death and by that he will later come to the opening of the eyes and see a world filled with abundance. The question is what does it mean to be rewarded with opening the eyes and does that mean that your attitude to the whole world changes?
R. Yes the attitude to the whole world, the attitude to the Creator, to this world, to the next world, it all changes through the reforming light.
15. S. (58:06) We can feel from the article that a person’s faith in the Creator is an asset that he gets out of this life. The question is what is faith and how can one examine his faith?
R. Faith is a special force of connection between a man and the Creator.
S. How can a person characterize or define his faith right now?
R. As much as in every state that he’s in he has the power to work above his desire.
16. S. (56:45) Faith is the condition to feel the good and bad?
R. Yes.
S. It also grows thanks to the good and the bad?
R. Yes, of course.
17. S. (59:11) Also in relation to the faith he repeats it a few times that a person should first believe in the Creator and then we can say he does act against the Creator. So what does it mean that he first has to have faith in the Creator? He has to have connection with Him above the desire like you said?
R. Certainly, that he believes in providence, that everything that is happening is happening for him.
S. We always said that the evil inclination is when a person recognizes that he’s opposite to the Creator and here it sounds like a bit of a different angle, that the evil inclination is doing something against the Creator, that’s how he calls the evil inclination here. What does it mean to do something against the Creator?
R. To work in the evil inclination.
S. If a person is let’s say lazy or doesn’t act in connection he’s working against the Creator?
R. Yes.
18. S. (01:00:25) It feels like the Ten is a collection of different qualities, each one brings like an asset. Ultimately I thought about it, how can we really realize the assets that everyone brings without saying this is for, this is against but to do it usefully?
R. We do that later in the construction of the Partzuf when the entire Ten connects into a Partzuf.
S. On this level?
R. On this level we don’t discover anything that is related to the truth, to the truth. We cannot yet build a Partzuf from all of these qualities and also we are not the ones who really do it, it is done by the upper light. It connects and changes us, it connects us in such a way that each one completes the other into a precise Ten.
S. He also writes about states that pains him, that there is pain in recognition of evil. That he identifies recognition of evil and he feels pain. To describe that pain, what is pain really about here?
R. When the evil is revealed it’s pain and because of lack of connection in which we can be as one man with one heart and from this Kli, from this heart we can bestow to the Creator.
S. Can we speed up the process of getting to pain?
R. Yes, as much as we think about it, as much as we associate ourselves with it we also get this status.
19. S. (01:02:36) You see from the article and everything that we do that a person is really changing but he keeps forgetting the work.
R. He doesn’t forget it, the Creator does that to him.
S. What do you do, how do you.?
R. We renew it each time but in a new way
S. What is the new way to what?
R. New conditions, new qualities and each in every one and also the way that they all fit together so the Creator each time changes this integrality, this connection. He makes it each time more and more suitable to be the right part of the system of Adam HaRishon.
S. How to not be in complaints towards the Creator in that state?
R. Simply each time each one has to hold himself and his friend in that and what we’re going through that we are actually building the complete ten sefirot we are building a Partzuf and therefore no one on the one hand from his own perspective cannot see the wholeness on the other hand if we see the future connection and we get closer and closer to it then we can see that we are getting closer to this wholeness.
S. It turns out from all of man’s work that he can’t treat what he feels at all as good or bad. There’s just a work that he has to do and detach himself from that?
R. For the time being, yes.
S. This feeling of good and bad always confuses a person on the path. How do you disconnect from It ultimately and continue to just be glued to the path in the Ten?
R. Only through Rabash’s materials.
20. S. (01:04:45) Man’s work in the ten together with his qualities leads him to a request ultimately, what is the request? Is it about the qualities or the request is already in connection with the Creator it’s not so clear what 0to?
R. What does it mean to advance from one state to the other through these stages?
S. More connection with the Ten that’s what I can say.
R. That too, so.
S. But is that on top of the qualities that I discovered how angry I am or lazy I am?
R. That doesn’t matter, the qualities will change if necessary if I ask. I don’t take into account that I’m this way or that way but I’m going to be indifferent. The Creator will take care of my change, in the change in the friends and the changes between us.
S. To ask of him more connection now after we get to the request because it turns out we use the Creator in order to connect more between us?
R. Of course. Didn’t we talk about that all the time?
S. It’s not that we want to use the connection between us to reach connection with the Creator?
R. Yes but we cannot carry out this connection between us we cannot establish this but only the Creator can do it.
S. What’s the difference between the Creator to connect us more in bestowing commitment to the Creator?
R. Bestowal is already an action where connection is what the Creator does.
S. Is it the same creator that we asked to connect more and invest in the connection?
R. There is a single upper force there are not multiple upper forces, God forbid.
21. S. (01:06:58) On the one hand the four foundations described here fire wind water dust and that they are given the person to begin with on the other hand it says that it’s in the hands of heaven except for the fear of heaven so what is the quality of faith that is the only thing that we can influence?
R. In Hebrew spiritual fear, Yirah, fear, it’s because I lower my head I bow my head before the Creator and before all these laws and these structures that He created that He put together this is what I need to do, that’s it. I bow my head and I’m willing to take upon myself his whole governance, His authority and his forces, whatever He will do to me so long as I will be able to advance towards Him.
S. Does it influence all of the rest of the qualities?
R. Yes, it influences all of my qualities, all of my other states.
22. S. (01:08:32) I wanted to connect to the friends question regarding when there is rage and someone wants to get out of the path, I also feel it and also when I want to help a friend when I feel that he’s almost out of the path and there’s a feeling that we cannot you spoke about this additional work that the Creator gives. We have to see it as a blessing. I cannot see the blessing here so my question. What is the advice, to me that I’m not a student like the friend or you that you are in Petah Tikva but I am here far from the friends?
R. I’ll give you advice, simply see that you are still on the path and for that you should be grateful, and out of that you will advance. That’s it and it doesn’t matter what state you’re in you’re still in the path you are there the situation is so and so say thank you and keep advancing, and that’s it.
S. But I am grateful because you are here. I see you and I see the father who gave me the greatest solution of my life for me. You are the way for everything and for this I am grateful to the Creator.
R. Thank you.
23. S. (01:10:24) You said there needs to be a reason for feeling bad so that you can feel bad for yourself related to this beast of the fire, wind, water, and dust, etc. that means that you have no reason to correct but if you feel pain of not connecting with the Creator, is that the only reason for your correction?
R. That’s very good if that’s how you feel that you have no complaints, no demands, no deficiencies, but only that you do not feel adhesion with the Creator, and then you only pray for adhesion that’s excellent.
S. That has everything to do with the intention of the pain and the suffering, feeling that?
R. Yes, yes.
24. S. (01:12:09) When does the Creator help me? Is it when I ask or I don’t want my evil inclination anymore?
R. You should try and see on your own what is it that he answers you for.
25. S. (01:12:37) If each one is born in a different time with a different energy, how can we make it so that it’s only in order to learn and live for the Creator?
R. That is no longer our concern, you should do what you need to do. The Creator will already do what is needed for everyone.
26. S. (01:13:17) Here Rabash writes not only we need to reveal the evil inclination but also to feel the worst of everyone. I don’t feel that I’m the worst from everyone. What should I do?
R. Keep going and you will discover, keep going and you will discover, just like sometime ago you didn’t think at all that there was anything wrong with you, anything bad no you agreed that there is a little bit of bad in you. Soon you will see that you are entirely bad, meaning up to what limit until you will have to ask of the Creator truly from the bottom of the heart that he will save you from your evil.
27. S. (01:14:26) Studying Torah for her sake corrects man’s qualities?
R. Yes.
S. That’s the only way to correct a man’s qualities?
R. Yes.
S. But it’s not the main goal of studying Lishma, right?
R. It’s not the goal, but it’s a means, yes.
28. S. (01:14:58) He writes that a person must pray from the bottom of his heart for the correction to come. We see that friends that truly pray and talk about it openly and we help each other but there is no correction for a certain qualities like laziness so what are we doing wrong?
R. Continue praying and gradually you will understand what has to be changed in your prayer in order to reach success.
29. S. (01:5:49) The article talks that a person has worse qualities than another person. What makes a person has worse qualities than the others?
R. It doesn’t depend on a person it depends on the root of the soul, each one who is greater than his friend, his inclination is greater too.
30. S. (01:16:31) An amazing article, the topic of building of the body of man from the four bases we’re all made of the four, until the force of faith awakens in us.
R. Your question, please.
S. In the matter of the awakening of the faith which is the creator operating towards us until then we are actually like beasts, how do we hasten this process?
R. By connection by the intensity of the connection.
S. Does the connection come from the root of the soul or the decision of the Creator to operate towards us?
R. Connection comes from our struggle to connect.
S. Who awakens that desire in us if it’s not in the four elements?
R. Right, the connection comes already from the original point in the us, where we used to be connected and now we’re not but we’re drawn to the connection as it was in the soul of Adam HaRishon.
31. S. (01:17:56) In the Ten we remained with your answer from yesterday where you said that we’re missing connection so the question is how do we create this connection because at the moment we need to help and support a friend that is very active but suddenly made a decision to take a vacation from the work? How to find the strength?
R. We have to connect around her and ask the Creator to give us a connection that that friend too and all the other friends won’t just scatter but unite.
32. S. (01:19:09 ) How to use the negative qualities in the Ten to come to a greater connection?
R. We turn to the Creator and ask him to help us connect above our bad qualities.
33. S. (01:19:37) Please tell us how on the one hand to work the creators work and on the other hand not to do the work in his place?
R. We cannot correct ourselves, we can only demand the Creator to bring us to the connection.
S. How not to replace one with the other?
R. Think about it and write down your request before you speak and check what you wrote and if it’s right so you’ll start speaking in that way.
34. S. (01:20:24 ) After a person starts to identify the control of the creator can he look at all of his States throughout the day as being connected to the work with the evil inclination or are there times during the day that are not connected to the evil inclination but simply are the four elements and we don’t need to work with them?
R. That is something that a person has to sort out and see what belongs to those four elementary qualities and what belongs to something the Creator needs to correct.
35. S. (01:21:06) It seems like the friends with bad qualities like anger and laziness, it seems like they have more work in the correction than the rest of the friends, is that correct and do friends that don’t feel those bad qualities in them?
R. It seems to us that way because it stands out and in others it doesn’t but you’ll see soon that it can change and it can be opposite that today they seem beautiful and suddenly you’ll see that they are not that they are bad that’s how we have to relate to each and every one with love, because she wants correction and connection just like me each and every friend and then in this way we can reach the right request towards the Creator to correct us.
36. S. (01:22:37) In the article he says the rains are the force that gives forth fruit and gives us strength in the work so when we have a little rain can we ask for more rains?
R. Yes, if you’re speaking about corporeal rain I don’t know we’re speaking about spiritual rain, about a force that comes down on the will to receive and gives the will to receive forces to grow correctly.
37. S. (01:23:21) Man is created as the will to receive. If so, how can a person recognize his true state which is that it is the nature of his creation and how can he take him out of such an evil state?
R. It helps him the Creator shines on him and the qualities that are opposite of him with the qualities of light giving love and he feels how much he is opposite of the light the qualities of the Creator and he starts asking that I want to be like him like the upper one, and from this the Creator does that favor and starts raising him and then he gradually climbs the degrees until he reaches the quality of the Creator.
38. S. (01:24:31) Our measures are meant for us to be that way sentence that way, is our prayer to use correctly this in the right way and not in an egoistic way?
R. No, it can be egoistic we have to change we determined the connection with the Creator that we are dependent on him and that he can change us and then we turn to him and that’s all we need, and then even though all this work is still called Lo Lishma and not for her sake but from Lo Lishma not for her sake, to Liishma for her sake we reach it.
S. But the change will be by me changing my measures or do we use it correctly?
R. Eventually we’re going to change our quality so we use them correctly.
39. S. (01:25:30) The elements that we read now, does it have anything to do with the root of our soul?
R. Yes.
S. This will remain with all the metamorphoses that we go through spiritually it will remain?
R. Correct, correct.
S. The Ten is made in such a certain set of rules that these work together?
R. Yes.
40. S. (01:26:00 ) What we read in the article and what we read yesterday too it was said that I need to thank the Creator for all the qualities he created in me, but where should I take these forces from to understand that this is the perfection, the wholeness I don’t love myself and I don’t know what to do with that I want to love my tent I want to yearn to take their qualities how to start in this work so that my forces and qualities will bring me there?
R. Connect with your friends and ask for a correction together.
41. S. (0126:52:) I understand that evil inclination and the ego are two different things. What’s the difference between the evil and the ego and the Torah and the potion of death?
R. The ego and the evil inclination you can say that they are the same, the ego is like a general form and the evil inclination is more of a private form but it doesn’t matter it’s the same. Now what you said the Torah is the light that bestows from above and if it works and shines on our ego so it gradually corrects our ego in a way that the ego becomes the will to bestow, that’s it.
