Rabash. Article No. 21, 1986. Concerning Above Reason

1. Rav’s Introduction: Above reason is actually the entire spiritual world, the revelation of the Creator, the feeling of the upper force, the connection with him, everything that exists above the material world. In the material world where we exist we are still considered beasts, they all seemed as beasts; that it is what is written about us, this is what we all start from and all of our work in the first stage of our spiritual ascent is to rise from reason to the degree of faith above reason. This is what we need to aspire to. This ascent is called salvation. Exiting one world to another world, from the beastly corporeal world in which we are born and we need to rise to the spiritual world which means to acquire a new mind, a new emotion and to see the world, to feel it the way that it is operated by the upper force. This is what we need to discover to identify with the upper force, this is actually what the wisdom of Kabbalah teaches us. In that we will discover all of the forces of the Creator that he reveals to us and we will discover in that all of our future to wish we need to reach, to discover, to rise to, to connect with, to receive it and be filled by it.

This is actually our work; in the end all of humanity reaches that, sooner or later there is a plan for it and we want to go above this plan ahead of it. We received an opportunity desire truly a gift from above so that we have the drive for it but besides that, besides the drive we never the less also need to add to it, many forces to actually disconnect gradually from everything that we have in the material world and to try to connect with the spiritual force,s the force of bestow, the force of giving, the force of connection and this is what we engage in, in the relations between us that we develop in our groups; we want to reach that, to perform such actions that they will elevate us to a degree of above reason and this is how we will advance, actually this is the plan of our life, the purpose of our life, to reach the force of bestowal which is above the force of reception. There is a lot of materials about that and let’s hope that we will be able to understand it properly, to absorb it and to realize it within us. This is actually a small introduction to this topic of concerning above reason that Rabash wrote; actually we can say that he is the only one who writes about it in a way that is so open and fundamental that before him and still no one after him, no one touched it in a way that is so broad and so close to each and everyone. 9. S. () According a person has to come to maimonides and come above reason in other words there are two manners of work here in mind I can somehow depict to myself I can in the intellect and not above it but how did I work in the feeling?

R. It is when the upper life comes and it changes your vessels and ones vessels begin to be in order to bestow.

(01:04:24) In working above reason with the friends to see them as great the question is, if I come closer to the friend I see him within reason as lower than I am but if above reason I tried to come closer to him and I suddenly discover things that I see in certain things he’s better and this helps me see him as great, is this regarded as above reason?

R. Yes, your action is above reason because before that within your reason you saw him as below you and then you made an effort and then you saw that he’s above you.

S. So basically this effort to come closer to try to see each friend this way will help us, this work will help us see him as great above reason or not necessarily?

R. Necessarily you will see him as great and this will help you to get closer to the Creator. Yes

S. Now another question I have some confusion if you can help me: concerning seeing friends as great if I come closer to the friend but the friend doesn’t come to the morning lesson for example, on one hand I can still see him as great because I too had states when I couldn’t come and I wanted to and I was trying to but now I see the friend that he’s not coming for example so can I within reason so I might see him as inferior within reason but above reason I can’t see him as great, the question is how do I relate to it because here I always have cause usually we say that those who don’t come to lesson they’re like this and they”re like that etc.

R. In short, how to relate to the friends?

S. Yes, to the friend who is not coming to the lesson, how do I relate to him?

R. You need to care that he will come.

S. But concerning seeing him as greater than I am should I still do this work?

R. Yes, because if I were in his place I would also receive the burdening of the heart like him, yes a burdening of the heart just like him.

S. Okay, and concerning envy, he talked about envy. Envy is something that can really promote a person, advanced him and also sometimes envy is an unpleasant state that you cancel because it is a negative envy it is jealousy because of our ego doesn’t want to be pushed to work so it awakens envy in a different way. The question is, is there a way to influence the envy so it is envy that makes me really want to be like the Creator, like the friend very much like the friend?

R. You need to reach such an envy towards each and everyone.

S. How do I do this, do you have any advice?

R. To feel yourself and see how much you are lesser than them

S. It says because a person looks to the eyes, this is good between men and men, between friends because we can go within reason or the Creator sees the heart meaning that which concerns matters of the Creator is above reason and the person should not look according to what his eyes see but go above reason, how do I come to see the friend the way the Creator sees the friend and not the way I think I see the friend?

R. How can you see the friend as the Creator sees him? Well, it’s truly impossible but nevertheless by justifying him completely, by justifying him completely, all of him.

14. S. (01:11:24) It is  written here that King Solomon calls evil inclination enemy and it is written if your enemy is hungry feed him bread for he calls on his head what is he advising us here?

R. To relate in a good way in short.

15. S. (01:14:01) In the article he divides between a person and his friend and the person and the Creator, it says that between friends it’s better if you come to a state that you see the greatness of the friends within reason but between the person and the Creator you always have to go above reason and then toward the end of the article it says if he does not feel good taste in the work he cannot observe the commandments of the Creator. If he doesn’t have a good taste in the work he cannot observe the Commandments of the Creator and then he says that you have to go above it, above this tastelessness. So if he has no taste, what gives him vitality in the work?

R. By going on without any taste but still he respects this matter, he respects it, he appreciates it, he is happy about it.

S. But isn’t he suffocated by having no taste?

R. But he doesn’t chase after the taste. He does not chase after the taste, he wants to simply be in the work of the Creator each and every day, like a slave.

17. S. (01:15:36) What is this work between a person and the Creator which is not through the friends?

R. Man’s work towards the Creator?

S. Which is not through the friends because he keeps making this distinction between a person working with the Creator and a person working with his friends?

R. We connect to the friends, so that we will have force between us, a connection, being drawn to spirituality, mutual help, mutual support and this is how we reach a state where finally the Creator helps us. This is actually our direction.

S. Okay, so it means that this thing of work between the person and the Creator is relevant only when he did what he has to do between the person and his friend and then he has this thing of?

R. Well the mitzvot, the commandments between person and his friends preside those that are between a person and the Creator.

S. In other words I constantly have to aspire to see the friends as great within reason and if I do it enough I may be able to begin to relate to the Creator the way I’m supposed to?

R. Yes.

S. So I get the flavor, the taste in the work with the friends because it’s within reason, there is flavor because it’s within reason and the work opposite the Creator or with the Creator has to go above reason because there there is no taste?

R. Above reason there’s also taste.

S. So what does it mean to work without taste as you explain to the friend?

R. Without taste of receiving.

S. And the taste is made of what?

R. From the desire to bestow, from faith above reason.

S. Every time I try to depict some flavor let’s say from the greatness of the Creator, from some great privilege it is to be on the path in the end it all ends up with a flavor within the will to receive even the greatness of the Creator at the end of the day there is flavor in the will to receive, so what flavor is it in bestowal as you said, what is this flavor?

18. S. (01:19:07) If I see the friend is greater than I am within reason, what room do I have to care for him to give him a personal example?

S. Let’s say he comes to lesson early and he does everything the teacher tells him?

R. That is still within reason.

S. In other words my concerns for the friends and the example I have to give him, how unrelated to, how greater than I am I see him?

R. Yes.

19. S. (01:20:08) You said to the friend that work between a person is, the friend comes before a person and the Creator. He writes that he writes, let us see the friends merits and not their faults, so the change in order to see the friends as great he asks for the Creator from it.

R. Yes, of course, who is he receiving from?

S. So first he has to work with the Creator or first with the friends?

R. But how does he come to this request?

S. He can see that he can’t see the friend’s merits so he turns to the Creator to make a change in his heart so he sees the friends as great. So he works with the Creator before he works with the friends because before that he only knows what he has, the whole article is like you have to be like this and like that but its only for us to see that we are not. Kabbalists are giving you an advice, you have to see, you have to check with yourself, you see that you’re not so, you turn to the Creator to change your heart. So it turns out your working with the Creator first not with the friends?

R. No, but you have seen, you have checked, you have come closer and you see that in your eyes they are down, otherwise why do you turn to the Creator?

S. To change you so you can connect to them and through them to him?

R. Well…

S. But you already turn to him, I’ll tell you, I look at the way we work, I can divide myself in the friends into periods when a person is entirely immersed in the friends and there are times where the person doesn’t see the friends at all, he sees only Rav and Rabash and the Creator, a different track. 20. S. (01:24:35) If I see that the friends are in bestowal, in the force of bestowal and they’re actually bestowing the great and I understand that bestowal is the true reality this is what we have to reach but I don’t have the power to bestow, I am a beast and the friends are great and they’re in bestowal and I am just a beast, so then what?

R. Then what, say thank you to the Creator that he shows you your friends in such a state, you don’t know their true state but what you see is what the Creator shows you. the Creator wants you to see them this way.

S. Okay, one day to the next day they’re greater, more in bestowal and I am more of a beast, so how do we even?

R. Keep on as an ox to the load and a donkey to the burden. Keep on until one day it will turn around, nothing to do about it. That is how the Creator plays with the person, I am willing to keep on going, like a soldier. What is not understood here?

21. S. (01:26:23) This article is so broad that it is very hard to contain it and I want to ask something about within reason and above reason in relation to the friends. On the one hand if I understood correctly, he explains that it is better to have a relation to the friends which is within reason, this is better. On the other hand if a person does not succeed in seeing the friends within reason but they’re great then he needs to see it above reason. So what is our aspiration in relation to the friends to see?

R. To always be able to learn from them to get stronger through them to even bend to them.

22. S. (01:28:08) What is the difference between chasing after the taste and chasing after a deficiency in terms of the work, the way you work?

R. A deficiency for what?

S. A deficiency to bestow.

S. We perform any actions, actions that we do all the time so I come out of the desire to feel taste or come out of the desire to receive a deficiency. How do we pay attention to, what do I come every action out of?

S. He comes to the society like everyone else but he doesn’t get a deficiency so what should he do? Everybody comes to the society, some people give the deficiency.

R. He’s not Incorporated with the friends, he doesn’t even have envy for them.

S. So what does he do?

R. He has to be more Incorporated with them, to be more with them.

S. So he should have a deficiency to that?

R. Yes, he can take their deficiency. One should ask his friends, exactly there.

S. And then he will get it?

R. If he wants it he will get it.

23. S. (01:31:04) Just to continue the friend’s question, all of us here pretty much do, seemingly, what we need to do, theoretically, then you told the friend “when the time will come, the time will come when this inversion will happen”. So my question about this moment, about this inversion, is it a continuous thing that happens over some time or does it happen in the moment, how does it happen?

R. According to the desire of the upper one, it all depends on the root of the soul; some people attain quickly the force of bestowal, some slowly, it is all about the exersion and the prayer.

S. But the inversion itself, does it happen in a second, suddenly you enter a new dimension, or happens slowly?

R. I can’t say, I can’t say.

24. S. (01:32:32) To continue what we talked about with the friend, we said it’s like a diffusion, it’s a process, it takes above reason to within reason and once again it’s like diffusion, it is a constant process of rising on the spiritual degree from degree to degree. This is what how one rises above reason, he raises from above reason, he puts it into within reason then he has to go above reason again. My question is, actually, when he brings that feeling from above reason to within reason, when he sees friends as great then it enteres into within reason, then he has to search again for above reason. R. The first one you said.

S. What did it say before?

R. When you receive the fulfillment, it’s considered to rise a degree.

25. S. (01:33:16) On one hand, Rabash writes that it’s better to see the friends as great within reason but when the body resists, then you have to work above reason, I feel like the reason the Rabash writes to us above, is higher, it’s the result of above reason.

R. Right.

S. It’s not the reason that I see him.

S. So in both cases, if he doesn’t have the emotional above reason, even if he knows intellectually that that’s only how he can receive it.

It’s like the body is tricking him, telling him “come on receive now and I will give you the light, the pleasure of receiving work in above reason”, and also here he has to get it as some kind of testimonial and not as the foundation. So in other words, between one and the Creator it’s only in faith above reason, you have to constantly search for that?

R. In short, look for it.

S. I’m trying to scrutinize it.

R. It’s okay, you are on the way, you are on the way.

28. S. (01:40:28) So you’re saying I need to constantly search how I need to clothe my work above reason?

R. Yes.

S. All the time, all along the path and only when I get some kind of Illumination then I can get some kind of equivalent, so what is this action that I do that I can understand that I’m advancing correctly in the path?

R. It’s with the respect to the friends you examine it.

S. What does it mean that I see it in a true way?

R. What does it mean “within reason”, the real way?

S. That’s what I’m asking, that I’m searching how to clothe my work and see it constantly above reason, as great, as better than I am. I come as zero and annul towards the friends, how do I actually make this equivalence in the work?

R. What is the comparison between what and what?

S. Between working above reason and working correctly on the path?

R. But with whom do you compare it?

S. The friends.

R. With the friends together you get this feeling, this diagnosis, and that’s how you advance.

29. S. (01:42:12) Rabash summarizes at the end and he says that “the person needs to accept the burden of Heaven without any condition and having to work above reason is not because the Creator cannot give us reason rather we must believe it’s all to our benefit. R. With the help of the friends, with the help of the friends you see how they advance like you, you’re heading towards the same goal, you’re supporting each other, giving examples to each other, and that is how you advance.

30. S. R. Yes, I need to try to elevate them even higher than what is seems to me.

31. S. (01:46:07) In faith above reason, is that, is it a habit to get into working in the group, like one flow, like the single flow in life?

R. Yes, but not only that, this also but not only that.

32. S. (01:46:42) What is this force of faith above reason, which I see the greatness of the friends, the greatness of the Creator, is it a spiritual force or some imagination?
