Rabash. Article No. 32, 1990. What “Israel Do the Creator’s Will” Means in the Work
1. Rav’s Introduction: (00.45) Yes, the world existed for thousands of years until a group became revealed that Abraham prepared, established in ancient Babylon and he called that group Israel, Yashar-El, [straight towards the Creator], and he taught them how to walk towards the qualities of bestowal, both between them and with the Creator. This group has to learn how to carry out this law, that we have to exist according to the conditions of the Creator. So let’s learn what does it mean that ‘Israel do the Creator’s will ‘,which is really what’s unique about them. There is nothing else that is unique about them, they are just a collection of people from all the different places of ancient Babylon that came together, they gathered and as those individuals, different individuals began to gather around Abraham, around the idea, the message of, “love thy friend as thyself,” and that was what gave them their name and direction towards development which is called Yashar-El, [straight towards the Creator]. Therefore, Israel do the Creator’s will, that’s understood from that what is their foundation? That they gather in order to establish, to form such a society whose goal is to do the Creator’s will.

3. S. (50:56) Can a person measure what he corrected?
R. No, how can he measure if he doesn’t exactly see where the beginning of the work and the end of the work he surely doesn’t see in whatever he did he doesn’t see in whatever he participated in, no.
S. How does a person come to a state where he works without wanting a reward?
R. That for him a reward is without wanting a reward.
4. S. (51:51) What does it mean that first all the evil in man has to become revealed and then when he receives the will to bestow it dwells over his entire evil? Isn’t the correction gradual where you reveal and correct, reveal and correct?

I want to ask if I understood that the key is to achieve the need to want to bestow and for that I have to feel the will to receive as evil. In the work I always find a great big gap a person makes effort, he identifies that he’s in self-love but he doesn’t feel it as an illness it’s not bad, it’s just reality, a person who’s sick is in pain and he runs to the doctor to get medicine so the pain will stop and with self-love appears the pain is missing to ask to want to bestow.
R. That’s called the measure of the recognition of evil that a person reveals, will hope that more will be revealed.
S. What’s missing in order for this to happen?
R. What’s missing is recognition of evil, it depends on how much you want to connect to friends, how much you want to help the others, how much you want to resemble the Creator, it depends on recognition of evil, to recognize your attributes,your qualities. To recognize your attributes and to recognize and in what you are similar and what you are opposite from the Creator.
S. This I understand well, one doesn’t want to make actions of connection that’s exactly the labor, that he does it even though he doesn’t want to and he discovers his nature but what I’m trying to say is that it’s as if you recognize the evil but it’s not felt as evil. I can look at it and say yeah that’s egoistic,yes, I can see it. I can even see that it even bothers me but it’s not felt as evil. You once said that when you went to the surgery that you wanted to just go ahead and get it over with because you can’t bear the pain you give this example sometimes. Thiis feeling that I cannot bear the pain of being in self-love where is that?
R. Where will I get it for you?
S. How can one receive it?
R. From the Ten, within the Ten. From the Creator you can receive only the beginning discernments and all the true discernments, we can receive them only in the connection or our lack of connection within the group.
S. The discernment is there but it’s feeling as bad as…
R. Then you didn’t hear.
S. Perhaps I’ll listen again.
6. S. (57:16) To continue what we just clarified, my friend sent a question and we were just clarifying that, Does the revelation of evil, does the recognition of evil, is it an indication for the answering of the prayer?
R. Revelation of evil and measure for?
S. The answering of the prayer.
R. There is something in that. But to say it like that absolutely? I don’t know, I cannot do that.
S. Where do we take the required Aviut in order to not be trapped by the net of the judgments the forces of judgment. We need the Aviut, coarseness but we also need to know how to correct it, because we have many states where we as if work in bestow and love of friends and so forth but how do we know that it’s a correct Aviut?
R. What brings you to connection with a Ten is called the correct connection, that’s what you need to reach first. Out of this, you will know in addition all sorts of other actions, degrees that you need to attain.
S. The answer is only the urgency to connect with the friends?
R. Yes, that’s what he writes. Because that’s precisely the correction of the shattering.
7. S. (01:00:02) What does it mean to believe in reward and punishment? What is punishment in our work?
R. Punishment in our work is when we distance ourselves from the desire to bestow and enter calculations of the private will to receive.
S. What does it mean to believe in reward and punishment?
R. That everything that we are in, we are between reward and between punishment, and depending on our preparations, in our actions, how we prepare ourselves, it depends on this how we appreciate the reward and punishment, how we value it.

R. Revelation of evil leads us to correction.
11. S. (01:01:57) What can we do to not be harmed from the rejections that we receive?
R. We need to hold ourselves together, and then we will not fall and we will not get hurt.
12. S. (01:02:31) In the example where he gives with a doctor, he basically needs to ask the doctor for two things. One to ask for this pill that will show him all his illnesses and then ask the doctor to heal his illnesses?
R. Right.

S. But there are also different defense mechanisms a person doesn’t want to see that the evil is within him. Basically intellectually it’s very simple. All the evil is in your will to receive and it can be explained, but in practice one does not want to see his evil.
R. Yes, and then what’s your question? By what means? we can nonetheless take it out of there?
S. How to ask, how to reach a state where a person asks for this pill and to take it and see all the evil just to agree to take the pill.
R. That is out of the hate for the will to receive. Out of hate for the will to receive, he requests and swallows the pill that reveals all of the illness in him. He needs to learn from himself and from friends just how much the will to receive operates against the connection between them, against him, against each and everyone, and out of this he will have such a great hate for the will to receive that he will surely be able to get rid of it.
S. So it’s indirect? It’s not directly one cannot directly ask for that pill?
R. Why? Why not?
S. Where will this hatred be born from?
R. I want to get a pill that will give me hate for my will to receive, then after this I will request and be happy to get any medicine there may be against the will to receive.
S. Yes, but what do we learn? Do I want to take a pill to love my friends? We never talk about taking a pill that will bring me hatred, that’s something else.
R. I don’t get you.
S. We never learn to look for the hatred, we look for how to be similar to the Creator and to bestow to the friends.
R. But when you get closer to the others, to the friends, then you reveal just how much you reject them.
S. Yes, I’m saying that it’s a byproduct, it’s not that we’re going directly for that, it’s a byproduct of the work.
R. Alright, but you do reveal it.
S. Where is the pill that will make you discover that? Do you understand what I’m asking?
R. No.
S. We always say that we have to look for love of friends and make the goal great and the greatness of the path, you’re always making, achieving, greatness reaching and looking for greatness and then the byproduct is to discover the hatred for the will to receive. So we’re not going towards the hatred to the will to receive, we’re not looking for it.
R. What is the question?
S. That is the question, why aren’t we looking for the hatred to the will to receive if that’s ultimately the pill that we need to demand; or that we just can’t go for it directly, it has to be a byproduct?
R. We always want to be drawn to love, to connection, and each and every step and stride we get closer to correction, and this that we take one step towards correction, it reveals to us just how much further we are from correction, that’s how the path is.
13. S. (01:08:33) Sometimes it says that we have to engage in love of others and hatred of the self, the question is if we have to get to hatred towards the quality of self love itself, meaning that we don’t like this quality of taking to ourselves wanting for ourselves or we have to hate this quality because it distances me from the Creator?
R. I need to reach hate that I need to think about myself.
S. Meaning the quality itself should be hated in my view?
R. Yes.
S. I heard friends saying that they feel the quality but don’t hate it, so it seems like we need a reason to hate it. How do we come to seeing this quality is not good, the Creator doesn’t give us a feeling like that.
R. This quality that a person worries for himself is bad because by this a person disconnects from everyone and from the Creator, and is in himself.
S. So it’s only when a person discovers the result of what this quality causes him, then he can reach a state where he wants to get rid of it?
R. Yes.
S. There’s both the need to not love the quality itself, and also what it causes to me?
R. Right.
14. S. (01:10:40) If I understand correctly, the recognition of evil leaves the person like he writes to a prayer and he writes until a person gives all the prayers for all the evil in him, then he receives the will to bestow.
R. Right.
S. So it’s a gradual process each time he discovers a little evil and then little prayer so to speak and until there is this kind of collective,
R. The question?
S. The question is, in the prayer for each little evil that unfolds, it certainly is felt as evil and all of his feelings, but what’s the correct prayer here? He doesn’t write here. I don’t know if I’m allowed to even ask, but what’s the right prayer for the evil that is revealed? What can you ask for it?
R. The evil that’s revealed?
S. Yeah, because it’s progress.
R. That I will have recognition of evil from the side of my nature, that I will want to get rid of it.
S. But the prayers that the recognition of evil will lead me to hating the bad within me?
R. Yes.
15. S. (01:12:00) What in the environment shows the faults in each and everyone?
R. That I feel that I have distance between me and others and something, that’s how deficiencies are shown and many flaws.
S. I can see in this lesson the society in what faults I discover in me?
R. Right.
S. So what in this environment reveals the flaws?
R. My desire to be in one man and one heart with everyone.
S. This is called evil, these flaws?
R. If we have the purpose of creation, if that’s the sign of the corrected vessel then, yes.
S. Now I cannot expect that something will be corrected in me until all the evil unfolds?
R. Why like that gradually?.
S. What becomes corrected gradually in every stage?
R. That each time more and more evil is revealed and we identify it accordingly and pray and ask of the Creator to correct it.
S. But the complete evil becomes corrected in the final correction?
R. Yes.
16. S. (01:13:27) What makes them shift from I labored and I didn’t find, to I labored and I found?
R. Its transition depends on the recognition of evil of the person.
S. But in both cases a person labors, what brings the finding? Because in one state he doesn’t find and then in another state he does, what’s the difference? What causes the finding?
R. Just how much he yearns to find what is bothering him to get closer to the Creator.
17. S. (01:14:17) What does it mean to try to bribe the Creator?
R. There are all kinds of tricks that we want to be built between us and the Creator.
18. S. (01:14:43) How to love the created beings if the answering of a prayer comes as the hatred towards the others?
R. It’s an order for us to come closer, to connect with the created beings and the Creator even more. That’s why he always increases the height which we need to jump over, in love towards the others.
19. S. (01:13:31) How can all these bad conditions appear in the ten so that we will be able to build accordingly the qualities of bestowal?
R. They don’t appear at once, and not all together. They only prepare us all that eventually we want to connect all of our achievements together so we can discover the Creator more and more. Only the purpose of discovering the Creator and connecting to Him brings us to the state that we want to be connected in the good connections between us. Because in this way, we discover the quality of the Creator, His nature.
20. S. (01:17:04) How can we ideally reveal the evil? What way did the Creator prepare for us? How does this supposed to perfectly happen in person?
R. The Creator more and more opens the evil in a person. In its way, he shows a person as much as he has more and more evil. Then according to that, a person needs to connect to the friends, to connect to the Creator, and balance that evil with the good force. In this way advance. The left and the right sides will be balanced and he’ll always go on the middle line.
21. S. (01:18:30) We see that the work is the work and the heart so how’s this relationship between the work and the heart advance us in the goal, in the work?
R. We always need to work with the heart and the connection between us to come closer to the Creator from the connection between us and in that way we see as much as we take steps ahead.
22. S. (01:19:20) How can I turn to my Ten with the request to help to suppress the egoism that is revealed? But the friends don’t feel that, they say that everything is okay, so how to turn to them for help?
R. We need to discuss it in the group and see what isn’t good between us yet and how far and opposite we are. Then it will be clear to us what we’re praying for, what we’re asking for, and where we need to advance and that has to be clear. Otherwise without that scrutiny we will not take any step ahead.
S. What is the difference between praying together for the Ten and to talk about the prayer with the Ten?
R. To talk about a prayer is just a way to learn, and to pray to the Creator, to correct our relations that’s already a correction, and obviously the correction is more important than learning.
23. S. (01:21:08) How should we perceive the expression “sin crouches at the door” from the Zohar?
R. That as much as we start working against the others, right away we see our ego, our will to receive and we have to be cautious with it.
24. S. ( 01:21:45) I have this feeling according to what’s going on, that I went to that doctor, I already took this medicine, and probably with my stupidity I forgot to ask what are the recommendations of how to take the right dose. What is to overdose because now I not only feel worse but there’s a feeling that I am part of the body of the Ten that has this growth, and I might even be harming the Ten in some way?
R. I understand, you just need one thing, you all need to gather together. It doesn’t have to be physically obviously. Think together how to relate to your issues, not each one separately, but to describe what the problems are, maybe even write it down before you on a piece of paper and then together, struggle against those problems. Fight them, and you will see how gradually and quickly they disappear.
S. If I understood correctly, the Ten is that guidance that will help me not take an overdose of the medicine, etc?
R. Yes.
25. S. (01:23:45) In the article he writes that a person feels bad to the extent in which the will to receive bothers him in attaining adhesion. He needs to pray to the Creator for help. The question is, how to discover that I am avoiding adhesion with the friends?
R. How to discover that you’re moving away and avoiding the adhesion with them? You just have to write it down. What did they think that needs to be done, what the whole group needs to do in order to be tuned in more between them in order to reach one man with one heart. What disturbs you? What do you need to do? Put that goal before you and check it everyday, a few times a day when you gather, devote one minute to check that state.
S. How can I check correctly these feelings in our meetings?
R. Each one needs to check himself and then tell the friends concretely and briefly.
S. What does each one need to examine himself?
R. As much as you’re moving closer or moving further away from the friends.
S. What do I need to say to the friends? That I’m getting distance from the friends?
R. The main thing is that you feel it. You don’t need to say out to the friends that they don’t have to fill their heart and head.
S. We are like examining ourselves to the extent that?
R. When we connect, we need to check ourselves as much as I feel the friends closer to me or further away from me.
S. Okay we did this refined examination. Then what with what we’ve discovered?
R. Now keep living with it, keep searching for a way to correct it.
S. (01:26:39) But you said in the beginning that you had to decide something common at first in order to measure it?
R. It’ll happen afterwards, now you can’t find anything common, you have no preparations for it.
S. If I discover that I’m getting further distanced, according to your advice I need to raise a prayer to the Creator or prayer to the Ten?
R. The Creator, only the Creator.
26. S. (01:27:11) The light of the Torah brings the recognition to the evil, the recognition of evil brings to a prayer, the Creator brought the way to faith, our way is through the recognition of evil or to go in the way of the Creator through the path of faith?
R. It’s the same thing. The recognition of evil is your current state, the path is your movement towards your future state, towards adhesion between you and the Creator.
27. S. (01:27:57) Why should I hate the will to receive if it’s the quality that the Creator gave me in order to adhere to Him?
R. He gave it to me so I can invert the will to receive into the will to bestow.
28. S. (0128:12)) Why are we asking for the desire to bestow, if I understand that first we need to ask for the revelation of evil?
R. That when I ask for the desire to bestow as much as I don’t want it and that will be the evil.
29. S. (01:21:31) We are asking to bestow from the Creator and we receive against that the recognition of evil? How can we establish the correct attitude towards each time on the path we discover more and more evil, how can we be joyous in this work and understand that this is a process that advances us?
R. Because the recognition of evil is the fuel to advance towards the purpose of creation towards correction.
S. This knowledge should bring joy to a person?
R. Yes, of course.
30. S. (01:29:09) It is written that each time he sees that his desire to receive becomes more excessive, and I heard from you that a person has to balance this evil with the force of good, when he sees that his will to receive is becoming more expressive, excessive.
R. You need to ask for more and more corrections.
S. What will we receive?
R. The will to bestow, what are we asking for?
S. I understand that’s what we’re asking, and we’re getting more of a will to receive.
R. I guess that the will to receive that is being revealed in us is not worse enough, strong enough, or stubborn enough that we can truly ask correctly to get rid of it. We still don’t feel that it’s death, that we will receive it.
31. S. (01:30:28) The recognition of evil is something that happens in that moment that the evil is revealed or it could be later, what do I mean? I was at some event with the friends. Many thoughts went through me against what’s happening there, but I didn’t understand that it was evil when I was there. I was inside my own ego and now when I sit and think about what was there, I understand the recognition of what evil was there and how much my will to receive was burning in me at the time. Can you recognize evil after the fact? Or does it have to be at the same moment it hits you?
R. I don’t understand.
S. I’m in an action with my friends and my ego is burning all kinds of thoughts against it. Why are we doing this and how are we doing this?
R. Okay yes.
S. At that moment, I didn’t feel as bad. I am inside of that party of the ego. Later I sit and I’m thinking about what happened and understand the gravity of what happened there and how much bad there was there, so can the recognition of evil be after the fact meaning like it happened here?
R. Yes, of course.
S. Then you can ask?
R. Yes, you can ask.
S. For the correction of what happened?
R. Yes, to correct what was revealed back then of course the main thing is that you have the recognition of that evil.
32. S. (01:32:08) We’re always talking about the matter of having to ask for connection and vessels of bestowal, but here Rabash is writing that we need to come to the need. What is this matter of the need? We just come to the need for the desire to bestow, what is that need? How do you come to that need?
R. A need for the will to bestow?
S. Yes.
R. How can you? We need to think about it, discuss it with the friends, envy, lust, and honor. Take a person out of this world, try and see are those tendencies developing in you, and in this way start advancing.
S. We also see that he writes later, that the more you do this kind of work you discover more evil and then there’s a state where later something is revealed. Later you receive something later, you kind of like. What is the action after, we do this action between us, it’s like something there that we fail each time and fall to reception. Where are we after this act of connection between us and what should we then ask? What do we need to demand at that point? so that we will receive it because it only depends on him giving it.
R. I want to discover that I am nullifying before all the friends, that I am not willing to give up on my annulment, I want to be the lowest of all and this is what I yearn for actually. Because this will give me closeness to bestowal, to connection, ask, ask.
33. S. (01:34:50) I don’t need to ask for the friends to be close to bestowal? Why do I need to really examine whether I’m high or low, don’t I just need to look at the friends and make sure that they will be?
R. This is where the question comes: am I examining the friends or myself? It’s clear that I need to ask for the friends, but I do the critique and the scrutiny on myself.
34. S. (01:35:38) Where after the scrutiny of myself is there the attitude of bestowing to the Creator?
R. We perform all these actions and these requests and these corrections only in order to somewhat come closer to the Creator through connection between us, nearing the Creator is through the connection between us to the extent in which we connect we come closer. There is no advancement here on the way when it comes to distance between me and the Creator, but rather there is advancement in nearing between me and the group, and accordingly I come closer to the Creator. That’s it, yes?
S. Why is there this kind of separation that he writes about Lishma,not Lishma, This connection between us and then connection to the Creator?
R. Yes, of course.
S. He’s saying now that that’s the same movement?
R. It’s not the same movement you have stations.
S. How can we make sure that the connection between us reaches a degree of connection between us and the Creator, where is the attention here?
R. If you connect between you that’s where you find connection with the Creator, and not anything else, first you need that point of connection between you, and then in that point of connection, you discover the point of connection with the Creator.
S. Is that additional work after the connection between us?
R. Yes, that’s additional work.
35. S. (01:37:42) About the need to bestow he says that you need to be strong and his reason and to not attain it himself so what does it mean to be strong in his reason in the relation to this need?
R. That he wants to be strong, he wants to hold on very strongly to the friends, that they will all have an attack in order to reach a connection.
S. Why does it always fall upon a person to feel that he needs to attain this?
R. Obviously he can think that, but the moment he goes from his plans to actual deeds, then he sees that he needs the group and the support from the friends and only in this way can advance.
36 S. (01:39:00) He explains there in the beginning that there’s the exertion like in corporeality like you give exertion and you get reward but later he explains that the real work starts when resistance begins, how do you identify this resistance?
R. That’s called resistance. Well maybe not resistance I’d say it’s corrections, that we constantly get corrected in the right way to advance otherwise we’d be breaking through like a herd and in this way through those all kinds of resistances, we are receiving a correction and direction.
S. How can we actually make this correct scrutiny in the form that we want to exert here and receive the reward and the fact that we want to exert and we’re actually doing some kind of real work here, like you said for correction.
R. I don’t understand the question.
S. How can we do the differentiation between the fact that we are now exerting and we want to receive reward in this, it’s what he wrote here that it’s not real work and the fact that we really start to work against our will to receive and that’s what like you said the desire for correction how do I identify these points?
R. We don’t identify it, it’s still all vague, you’re right, it’s the right question. We have to discover it and practice.
37. S. (01:41:09 ) I understand that a person reveals in his evil in his attitude whether he’s closer to the friends or distant to the friends and he needs to ask for that, what about the revelation of evil that he discovers outside of the ten at his work, there no prayer for that?
R. No. No prayer, no scrutiny, no nothing. You need to live with them in a way that human society determines how organized relationships have to be between everybody. That’s it, just like that, just like everybody.
S. What to do in those states in which I’m discovering, like my attitude towards the outside, do I need to go back to my Ten to think about the connection?
R. Yes, you’re working with whoever’s on the outside on the outside and whoever’s in the Ten as a Ten, and don’t get confused between them, it can also bring a virus into the Ten, to the friends.
38. S. (01:42:40) Between the desires to bestow and the need to bestow he writes there a person needs to be strong in his reason and understand that he’s not demanded to come to this desire, but rather he’s demanded to come to a need to come to the desire to bestow.
R. Yes, that’s how it is with everyone that we have the need and the rest will happen by the Creator. He will teach us, he will push us forward and so on.
S. How it’s a little hard to discern when he’s giving us this caution: do you have to come to a desire but to a need. How to depict between the desire or the need to the desire to bestow?
R. It’s a huge difference, I don’t know you have a lot of examples from life, that I need to have a need let’s say for what, well give me an example.
S. To quit smoking?
R. To quit smoking, okay let’s say that I want a desire to stop smoking and so then I pray how to advance towards such a desire.
S. What’s the difference between that and a need of the desire?
R. I still don’t have a need, but it’s good that I will have.
S. A need it’s like you could say a necessity for it?
R. Yes, I didn’t smoke for 20 years even more maybe, and then I started again, so I understand what this is and what that is. That’s it.
39. S. (01:45:05) An essential point in the article he talks about is exertion. We know that in this world the quality of the effort that a child gives in his life is different from the effort that an adult gives. Now maybe in parallel to let’s say apparel that a child that exerts, it feels to be that many times we are going around, let’s say giving up hours of sleep and all kinds of pleasures and life and we call it exertion like a child. I would like to know when the exertion on our path comes like an adult. When can we say that I am giving forth exertion today? I want to give such an exertion effort?
R. The true exertion is that you don’t exchange the cow with the donkey as we say, but that you work against your true will to receive. That you feel that this is what’s in me and this is what aims me and awakens me and pushes me ahead, and against that I need to work.
S. The desire to sleep, does a catalyst even deal with such desires? Such resistances of the body?
R. Yes and no. Whenever it’s a body so we don’t sleep what can we do everybody understands that there’s such periods.
S. When is it considered that a Ten is now exerting this, putting forth an exertive effort?
R. That we reach a decision that from this moment onward, let’s say for a week we are thinking every time that we can, meaning that we’re not as slaves. But anytime that it’s my own time, I’m constantly devoting it to raising society, to connection in society. Why? because by this I want to give contentment to the Creator.
