Faith Above Reason – Selected Excerpts from the Sources. #45
1. Rav’s Introduction: Yes, this is our purpose, that’s what we have to come to. This is the entrance into spirituality because faith about reason, the force of Bina, that would be above the force of Malchut that’s the sign that’s the laws of the spiritual nature, and this is what we have to attain. There are many states in it we have to go through some we have come through already and the important thing is between us to try to connect along the way and each one helps his friend, and this is how we advance. How much time does it take? That depends on both on us and because entrance into faith above reason is a gift from above, as we’ve read, and it happens by the Creator who gives us an answer to all the questions, to all the complaints, to everything that we expect.
Each shall help his friend, of course we have to enter together, this degree, this place of faith above reason, meaning it has to be above our reason, above knowing and feeling and understanding, and we rise above that. We do everything that is good in the eyes of the Creator and the more we study and learn we have to imagine what is good in the eyes of the Creator, and how can I do it and how do I do it not by myself but together with the friends, to make room for them in it and for them to strengthen me, that’s how we advance. Any individual states in this each and every moment is support, it has to be there each shall help his friend, there has ascents, descents, obstacles, we need to try and support one another.
Understand that alone it’s impossible because it goes against that nature of the degree of Bina and in this way we can advance. We should not despair as the Baal HaSulam writes, many have fallen and many more will fall on the path from Lo Lishma to Lishma but we need to carry on and to see how much to what extent we can strengthen the friends by maintaining the connection between us, by that we strengthen each one strengthens himself and the others and only this way this mutual concern and mutual support we come to the goal. Sometimes that appears to us as if we are dispersing as if we cannot support each other so much that we don’t feel the mutual support, that’s also correct it’s also good because each and everyone must awaken himself for how to be connected to others.
There is plenty to do in this and in a sense we scrutinize all those things along the way, yet I have no doubt that we are going through some advanced scrutinies where the more the person scrutinizes what he has to do in order to reach identification with the Creator where is his individual work, where is the connection between the individual work and the group work and later with all of humanity with the Creator Himself, and gradually he scrutinizes these things and they come they get incorporated into one system one general vessel of Adam HaRishon. Let’s just scrutinize these things.
2. S. (06:34) What mutual support needs to be between us on our path to faith above reason?
R. Mutual support between the friends it’s as Rabash writes also Baal HaSulam writes each shall help his friend; we have to set an example in every way by which we can bestow to one another, where else? We simply learn together, by that we awaken a force field of bestowal, a great field that exists between us. The problem is that we don’t feel the power of this field, this is called the field that the Creator has blessed. The Creator blesses the field of connection, the force field between us and we awaken it, we ask it, we ask Him, to awaken this force to bind us together using this field and for us to advance. We also need to understand that as we learn about it in the Torah we studied it. We read about it after wanting to connect, we discover we’re unable to connect how much we are not able to connect.
That’s what happened with the brothers of Joseph whom he wanted to gather and assemble and it did not work out for him, rather as the Creator decreed that he’ll go through this big detour in Egypt and discover each other there and connect. We also should see that although the path of the Creator are straight we don’t quite understand them and only later may we attain them but for the time being during the scrutinies we can see a thing and it’s opposite and we don’t quite understand where we are, we forget what we’ve read and learned and we’re not always are ready for the correct scrutiny.
Again each and every day we add something and a penny and a penny are added to a great sum and we gradually begin to see how we can activate the forces of faith above reason and raise above ourselves to the degree of the Creator and we continue to climb the ladder of degrees of His revelation. It takes time, it takes many efforts but, what can you do, we’ll learn and we’ll do but this is really our work. How much each one succeeds that’s his calculation it doesn’t disappear it’s his eternal property by which he cleaves and glues his soul to the Creator and that’s how we will advance. I’m happy to see that nevertheless each one is maintaining his connection with others to some extent, you can always do it more but how much we are not letting go of the path but rather we understand that here we must simply be adhered to one another as much as possible and then we advance. okay? Let’s get into the excerpts, very good excerpts.
I really wanted to thank the team that collects those excerpts, I’m always excited when I open them up and I see how much we can learn from these excerpts. There are some complaints and I admit that there are people who complain because it helps me to correct myself, nevertheless we are taking steps such that no one has taken before us in the form of study, the style of study, the languages, the style of connection between us, so we have to take all this into consideration, our group is not like all other groups that still exist here and there because we only think about how to enter Lishma this is our main goal. There is nothing else as important before us.
3. S. (13:28) Yesterday we had a meeting between two tens and when the friends spoke during the workshop some of the friends I felt really well some I could not even hear. How do you feel all the friends?
R. According to the importance, how important is each and every friend? We can’t quite grasp it but each one seemingly returning a part of my soul to me so even a friend is not important to me and I don’t really consider him nevertheless we have to value each and everyone because we don’t know as Rabash writes, how many sparks of sanctity exist in each and every friend and how much they can add and they indeed add to each and everyone before we reach a vessel in which we can locate the Creator and advance. So we have to look after each one and specifically those beware of the children of the poor because from them the Torah will come, specifically those you don’t recognize their greatness their genius specifically from them the Torah will come, they’re called the children of the poor.
S. I want to add here. It’s not that I’m considering one friend to be greater than the other but my ear seems to filter what one of the friends is saying.
R. Make the correction on it add importance to it. The main thing is importance.
4. S. (15:37) Is faith above reason a prerequisite to enter spirituality or do we achieve faith above reason after we enter spirituality?
R. No. Faith above reason is the quality of bestowal and you raise in importance above your will to receive so you seemingly try to love the Creator more than you love yourself try to appreciate in the friends and the group more than yourself, forcefully through using all kinds of exercises you try to do it and then as much as you can raise them you see how much you have actually fallen into it a resistance to it but that’s the work. It takes months and sometimes years, there are people for whom it takes years to understand this principle and there are those who never grasp this principle. Faith above reason is the formula of the upper world and the faith within reason or below reason that’s the formula of the lower world, our world. That’s what I want you to understand, that’s what we’re discussing here otherwise these words will be empty.
S. So we can say that faith above reason is the tool to achieve Lishma. If we don’t have faith above reason we can never achieve Lishma.
R. Yes. For faith above reason and Lishmaare synonymous.
5. S. (18:03) In the beginning you explain that faith above reason is a gift that comes from above why is it called a Gift? Why did you call it a gift?
R. We can have all kinds of exercises about joining the 10, coming to the lesson, having meals, and all kinds of signs of connections, but to connect truly to establish a power of giving that would be on a higher degree compared to our ego we cannot do it. So, from all of our exercises the bottom line is that we want to awaken the Creator to do this action on us. That is what we are expecting. Hence, all the work all the different works that we do, we read articles we read these excerpts and more and more. All of it is only to convince ourselves that faith above reason or Lishma for her name that the Creator is more important, the friends are more important than me that is how it is expressed practically if we attain faith above reason which is the spiritual principle. It is a spiritual principle.
6. S. (19:59) I feel like whatever I do is never enough. It is not possible to give contentment to my friends and to the Creator. How can I overcome this feeling? Thank you.
R. Hold on, you said several things here. You cannot do it, you do not want to do it, you do not understand how it is done. Is it even possible to do it? So contentment to the friends, if I wish to give contentment to the Creator in order to approach him, to feel him, and to reveal him I must start with giving contentment to the friends. There is no other way! The friends are that framework in which I can bestow, give to the Creator. Otherwise, I do not connect to Him. It is like you do not have the device in which to connect and you are not holding on to it, so how can you connect. Therefore, what we need is a society. The society has to be organized in such a way that through it I connect to the Creator. So, according to what we are learning from the structure of reality, the ideal construct is the 10, no more no less. But, they say that even less, fewer people, it is ok. The Creator will consider it correctly and make the right calculation with us.
S. (22:04) She is asking something a bit different. She is saying, whatever she is trying to do, she never feel that she succeeds to give contentment: not to the friends or to the Creator. How can she overcome this feeling that she doesn’t succeed.
R. I do not think that she has any problems. I do not think so. He has to simply keep going. This takes time. Sometimes, it takes months. There are instances in which it takes years before a person comes to the understanding, the awareness, the feeling that he has to give contentment to the friends and through them to the Creator. It is not so simple because the thickness of our ego is substantial.
By the time we get through our ego and we begin to feel the friends, even to a small extent as we feel ourselves, that takes a long time. You should understand. What are we talking about in the wisdom of Kabbalah? How do we climb the degrees from below up to the degrees of bestowal giving, connection, mutual awareness and that is how we reveal the Creator gradually. And, the revelation of the Creator to the created being is in general what the wisdom is talking about.
7. S. (24:09) In what can the congress help us to enter Lishma for her name?
R. Every connection that we create: every meal, every gathering especially the morning lesson. Each of those connections gives us.., it takes us a step forward and another step and another step because we are together. We support each other, we cause greater connection among the broken vessel of Adam HaRishon.
S. What do we need the other friends?
R. The greater the number of people, the work that becomes somewhat more complex on the other hand it becomes easier to carry out.
8. S. (25:14) You said that we need to perform exercises, that we love the Creator more than ourselves and that we love the friends more than ourselves. How do we perform these exercises during the course of the day? How to aim ourselves?
R. You can refrain from talking and singing and yelling, but keep everything in your thoughts because it is written: everything will be clarified in the thought, so try to think about the connection between you and imagine it, depict it in all kinds of shapes and forms, especially see it, concentrate it, powerful. This way you will see that you can go from your thoughts to actual actions and that you will feel them being carried out in practice, not in the bodies but in the desires and that is how you will come closer to one another and you will begin to feel how even in this compression that exists between you, you will feel your work on the general correction until one force will be revealed. The force that gives birth to us, arranges us and establishes us. This is called the Creator, come and see. You will begin to discover it as the connection between you.
S. (27:20) These actions you talked about: in action and thought. how do we do that?
R. Connection, simply connection. There is nothing more than that. When we help one another, when we support one another, when we try. Even though we are not built like that by nature, but on the contrary each one is by himself. Each one, especially in our generation, each one is an egoist. He is accustomed to living alone, but when we attach ourselves to one another we can feel in the connections above the rejection. Pay attention! Connection above the rejection.
Where, the more rejection I have from the others, I am a modern person, I am accustomed to living by myself. I was also educated in my parents home alone. As an individual, I did not feel any deficiency in that. Also, when I had a few friends I only used them in order to play whenever I needed and that is how it is throughout our lives. And when we come to the wisdom of Kabbalah, we begin to hear that everything has to happen in the connection between us. This becomes an extremely great obstacle. I was not able to accept it for a long time and Rabash arranged me next to him in such a way that I also did not have company, I did not have a society. Why he did it was his business, but what we have to do today- our time, is nevertheless connection.
But in the connection, we have to think about one thing. That through the connection between us, we bring contentment to the Creator. Two things we need: connection, the friends in action and thought and by that we bring contentment to the Creator and each and every action of connection between us and the connection between us and the Creator from love of the created beings to the love of the Creator it brings us a step closer to the realization and implementation of the method.
We need to talk about these things more and more and we have to be writing them down because I receive such questions daily that make me think it is not clear and I know about myself that it takes years. I know I am not afraid to say, it takes years because this is our nature. Until we enter connection according to a true inner action, before that we cannot say that we understand the method at all. It becomes clear only from the action. From doing.
9. S. (31:40) Is that enough that we make the effort to connect between us or is the reason that pushes us to do what is important? I understand that the friends are necessary for me to exit myself but deep down I love myself, do I really need to reach really love for the friends?
R. This the light will do; there are things we can do and we have to start, but then it says “The Creator will finish it for me”, that The Creator finishes the action, He connects us and He completes the correction. He starts the connection “i am the first and i am the last” and He finishes the correction. But in the middle we have to remember to connect together all these aspects that require correction.
10. S. (32:43) In the recent period I cannot seem to justify the friends within reason. How can I work to go above a reason?
R. There are different periods of time and this specific period we have now entered is a very productive period, the results from that are very good, except gradually we will discover them. But from their revelation derive a great deal of benefit, we need to show one another how much we are drawn to connection; set an examples and from that all of our friends who are still don’t feel the importance and they are too lazy to advance, will see eventually how our vessel is becoming one of mutual support and with great intensity. Great intensity.
Don’t look at it as if it is about women, men, old, weak, beginners, don’t look at that. Because you cannot see their souls; behind each and everyone there is a soul, and a special soul and with all that it went through, the incarnations and preparations in order to come into this framework and start connecting in the world Kli. That is not simple. The Creator has been taking care of us for many many years and we have gone through many different states. I truly hope that we’ll understand it and we will succeed faster.
11. S. (35:20) how can we distinguish if we are really drawn to connection or it’s the will of our ego?
R. Of course for now it is the will of your ego, so what? Of course our ego is pulling us. It is called “help against ”, that specifically our ego is what brings us to correction, yes. This is how it’s built. Soon we will learn how much it is twisting us and we think that we are going to profit and succeed within our ego and only later we will understand that the Creator arranging it in such a way that specifically through this angel, that is called “help against him” because he specifically brings us to the corrections. So, there is nothing to be afraid of, the ego, it is the ego, the main thing is to approach the goal.
S. We are there in Lo Lishma, not for her name and we just need to ask for the correct intention?
R. Yes, only that. Correct.
12. S. (36:55) I wanted to ask during this transition from Lishma to Lo Lishma, what is the main change that happens in the person?
R. The main change that happens in a person, is that he begins to listen to what is for Lishma, for her sake. R. Prayer. Simply to ask. To ask as much as possible more and more, and then “each shall help his friend”. We are under such scrutiny that all the conditions connect together, and support one another.
S. In this transition when everything is so subtle, from what should we be aware of on one hand and what should we pay more attention to?
R. The main thing is not to despair. The main thing is not to despair. What will be will be. S. Specifically this point where the path to the Creator, the passage to Lishma through the ten, the connection with them, on one hand it becomes so tangible, so necessary and on the other hand it is constantly slipping through your hands and specifically about this we cannot stay awake all the time?
R. Yes, because you do not have to be the Host here; you need to adhere to this idea, to the Creator through the group. and with these three things together as much as they exist then you succeed. The main thing here is not the work to succeed is the work to perform, because from this there is contentment to the Creator. It is like a baby, as much as he does not know anything but his smallest reaction, a smile, you see how much emotions it awakens in the parents compared to the older children. Thus, we need to take into account the connection between us and the Creator as the absolute love on His part. R. We are developing in the direction of distancing. Look at how much the ego is manipulating us towards distance from each other; and this is correct, this is our nature, and we need to work above it not to erase it, not to go against it but rather above it.
S. Only the upper light can arrange this suffering, what should happen?
R. No. We do not want to determine any state here, we just want to reveal the connection between us internally, and this internal connection between us already needs to show us how to advance onward.
14. S. (46:06) I heard you say that prayer is what we have to do. What is exactly a prayer and how does the power of this request work in reality?
R. It is raising a MAN. Prayer is called, raising MAN; it is a request, a lack, from a lower degree to a higher degree. And if we raise a lack to a higher degree, in this we are turning to the will to bestow that it is the higher degree by necessity; and then it must help us to the extent that we can awaken it through our request.
S. How do we combine the prayers?
R. You are focusing towards correction and in this we can activate the higher degree that will help us, that the upper light will influence us and will arrange us.
S. If I am sitting with my friends and everybody has the same request, the same desire, maybe different words, does that work more powerfully, this is what’s called the unity of the prayers?
R. If we are now all talking about the same topic and we are all engaged in our mutual topic, it is already a prayer and the prayer of the many. Because there are many people here from many countries, with many different qualities and we all belong to the same system of Adam HaRishon, the first man. So, here we absolutely have the justification to reach the Creator and bestow to Him.
S. Is there also an appeal from the upper one to the lower one?
R. There is an action of bestowal from the lower to the upper and from the upper to the lower off course, mutual bestowal.
S. But is the upper one turning to the lower asking or demanding something from the lower one?
R. The Creator demands of us that he awakens our desires; desires and conditions and then in such a manner He is managing us, in a greater or lesser revelation.
Reading 45 (53:41) Shamati, Article No. 135, “Clean and Righteous Do Not Kill
15. R. (54:45) Rav reads: Clean and the righteous do not kill. A righteous is the one who can justify the Creator.Whatever he feels, whether good or bad, he takes above reason.
Whatever he feels, whether good or bad, he takes the above reason. That it all comes from the Creator and it is all for good. This is considered “right.” Clean refers to the cleanness of the matter, the state as he sees it. This is because the judge has only his eyes to see.
Whatever his eyes sees, it is ok or not ok from the side of the Creator. Whatever is happening to him and in this he has a clear knowledge according to his senses and if one does not understand that matter or he cannot attain that matter he should not blur the form that he is seeming to his eyes. This is considered the left and he should nurture both.
That both the left and right, one is justifying the Creator and that he’s also performing criticism upon him. He is going with both. This is called the clean and the righteous do not kill, that both of these forms of scrutiny, criticism and justification that is called righteous and clean that he does not take anything into account besides what he can sees according to his senses, and then he does not kill anyone of them of these discernments but goes with both. Is that clear?
So again this is not simple. Clean and the righteous do not kill. You have in you both clean and righteous so do not destroy or ruin any discernment of both. One to the other one and one on account of the other or to blur something here. No, rather it should be in both the clean and the righteous in both forms and both need to be nurtured together.
16. S. (57:14) Can we go left and right at the same time? Do we have such an opportunity? To go there is a strong feeling of split. We are looking for unity and here you feel this split.
R. At least now you see that it is a split.
S. We don’t want to stay in that state?
R. No, this is only that place of reference. It is written that you have two senses, clean and righteous that you feel as such and you are not allowed to cancel one in respect to the other rather you need to go with both.
S. What’s to do with the feeling of the split?

R. I simply accept what I receive from the Creator because ” There is None Else Besides Him’, and I agree with how he controls me.
S. Agreed, I have to do something?
R. I don’t want to do anything. I want to accept these things as they come from the Creator that in this he controls me.
S. What do I do if I feel bad about what he is giving me? What do I do at that moment?
R. So if you accept it correctly it could not be that you will feel bad.
S. What does it mean to take it incorrectly?
R. To take it correctly is to come from the Creator.

20. S. (01:02:31) What is meant by ‘blur the forms’ in the passage?
R. Meaning that I need to know precisely according to how much I can scrutinize, yes? That it comes from the Creator that it comes in a certain form and I need to respond upon it. and in the clearest manner possible you need to scrutinize.
21. S. (01:02:12) You said that we don’t have to do anything with this contradiction between the two lines but they cancel each other out. There’s a conflict between them but should we at least create more prayers so that the middle line will come?
R. To form a prayer is always good but I cannot do one upon the other, on account of the other because when both are contradicting they cannot be in mutual support or some mutual combination one into the other. I simply need to advance as such. There will always be this internal split within me, always.
When will the connection be? Whenever we will have a restriction, screen, reflected light and in this we will begin to arrange and connect put together the Partzuf of the soul. Then we will understand how we do this. In order that we will have a soul that is incorporated of two opposing forces and the middle line, in the middle, which is the creator that holds both that maintains both. That is what will occur in the future. In the meantime we are only scrutinizing the states that come towards us.
S. So it depends on us what depends on us to form the prayer in the state?
R. Yes. Yes.
22. S. (01:05:02) This is an amazing excerpt. It is written that it requires the cleanliness of the state. Can you explain what is clean?
R. Clean it’s called how much one cleans one’s perception of what’s received.
S. How not to try to replace one with the other but to hold on to the two lines.
R. Try.
23. S. (01:05:58) I didn’t understand what it means to nurture both?
R. To hold them, to maintain them, to arrange them, to care for them so that they will exist.
S. Doesn’t the clean state already exist as it is?
R. No, nothing exists just as so, in the future we will need to maintain the left line.

R. Clean is that you see the matters and you see them without blurring because one has not what his eyes see and judges only what his eyes see. We do not want to blur the matters to ourselves and he says here that this is considered the left and we need to nurture both.
S. Meaning the Kli here is the left line, reason?
R. Again. Clean and righteous do not kill. Righteous as one who justifies the Creator that whatever he feels whether good or bad he takes everything above reason, everything is good.for the good and righteous he simply takes it all above reason and this is considered right. Clean refers to the cleanliness of the matter. What is the cleanest of the matter? The state as he sees it because a judge has only what his eyes see and if one does not understand the matter or cannot attain the matter he should not blur the forms as they seem to his eyes and this is considered left. Syou have right and you have left and you need to go with both, that is all he is saying here.
25. S. (01:09: 03) Can we justify within reason?
R. If we are in our state that we can do it but in spirituality we cannot justify the Creator within reason, only above reason.
26. S. (01:09:38) Is there a certain amount of suffering.that one needs to undertake before connecting with friends and the Creator? We just need to accept it or can I minimize the suffering by acting righteously. I feel that the Creator is always talking to me but I can not hear what I need to do so I’m not suffering?
R. We don’t need to agree with everything that we receive, rather we need to respond as correctly as possible and in this we are hastening our development and shortening the path and it is good in the eyes of the Creator.
27. S. (01:10:39) Is this the state of Lishma where you are in righteousness and cleanliness?
R. In both, if I am maintaining them, I am aiming myself towards the Creator. That is called Lishma.
28. S. (01:11:15) We are always talking about building the right which is belief beyond logic but how do we build the left which is cleanliness according to the article?
R. We will only be Kabbalists when we will reach Lishma to the extent of Lishma that we will be to that extent we go in the upper world, the spiritual actions and then we become truly spiritual people Kabbalists attaining the actions of the Creator.
S. Otherwise unless I reach an inner emotional state and only after that I can build faith above reason?
R. If you reach a sensation a feeling you need not build anything you have already done it. You’ve built yourself this way because all in all you are a desire which is man and man is a desire that the Creator created. If you arrange your desire in a way that you feel the actions of the Creator and you identify yourself with it there is nothing more.
S. What does it mean that you cannot go in faith above reason before you have reason?
R. Yes of course, you must also acquire knowledge but knowledge means that he understands where he is and it is not what the book says. It is that he tries to carry out the actions with him with the friends, with a Creator and out of him seeing these things and acquiring them, he already makes the system of reception and bestowal out of them.
